lemsip

How is this for a random question...
Does anyone know why it says to use hot water and not boiling water when making Lemsip??
Does it make any difference?

Good question. I've also wondered about that.

Maybe because boiling water is dangerous ??

Maybe it makes the drugs less effective or something? 'Cos you don't put paracetamol tablets or whatever in boiling water first...

Or maybe they think that in your unstable health state, you may be more susceptible to dropping boiling liquid on yourself?

my first thought was maybe it would stop the drugs working, but then you hear all kinds of stories these days about people suing companies because they 'wern't warned that hot water would scald them'
I've just googled it and can't find anything :frown:

Haha, I Googled it too. :p:

I need to find more to do with my time...

Just as an aside it's the first time I've had it and it's nicer thn I expected because lots of people said how horrible it is. Maybe I put more water in?

Reply 6

It's probably okay; I quite like it too. Did you put the whole sachet in? Aww, poor you - do you have a cold/flu? :frown:

Reply 7

No idea. I think Lemsip is disgusting anyway, i dunno how anyone can drink it. In the past when i've had a cold and no other medicine i've made it and had to hold my nose n swallow it all in one go lol it tastes foul

omg dont say that about lempsip!! its wonderful, its like a mother to me. or something.

Ive been drinking it twice a day all week (i do have a cold, i dont just reeally like the taste  )

Yeh you cant use boiling water because it does something to the chemicals in the drugs and they dont work. Same reason your not allowed to chew pills

Yes I agree...

For paracetamol...Melting Point is (°C)169

http://students.chem.tue.nl/ana21/Safety/Chemical%20Properties.htm

For the decongestant pseudoephedrine it is pretty much similar...
182 - 186 C

http://www.chemicalland21.com/lifescience/phar/PSEUDOEPHEDRINE%20HYDROCHLORIDE.htm

And for vitamin C it is even higher... 192 C

So boiling water won't make the drugs less effective... It must be one of these "may contain penut" things... To stop anyone sewing the company if they get burnt using the product...

you can guarantee that without warning messages, some idiot would pour it up their nose, so it gets burnt into a shape resembling Michael Jackson's and be like "it never said pour it in your mouth, give me £100billion"

lemsip is the drink of the effing pixies

it works wonders and tastes great

umm i duno why it says hot water and not boiling... maybe they didnt realise people would read into things like that so deeply?

Reply 12

never sure though whether it sorts out a cold though cant do no harm in taking it of course.
I always put it in boiling water when I have it. I just assumed that's what it required.
It's horrible stuff anyway.

yeah agree i found it does alright to be honest.
Lemsip definitley gets worse as it gets colder. It's great if you drink it hot, but tastes foul if you let it go lukewarm.

I always use boiling water with Lemsip, haven't noticed any side-effects yet :ninja:

I can't stand the stuff, it is absolutely foul. My mum used to make me drink it when I was little and she wouldn't let me do anything else until I had finished it. It always used to take me ages to finish and it definitely does get worse as it gets colder. That reminds me of those dis solvable aspirins that I was subjected to at a young age as well.

Reply 17

Maybe it's not the drug that gets affected, but the bit that makes it tasty?

Reply 18

Lemsip is useless, I've found it does jack all. This would be because it only contains less than 1 adult dose of paracetamol per sachet

Beechams Flu Plus all the way

Ooh I was wondering this today. I suppose the water just doesn't necessarily have to be boiling in order to complete the drink, it's not like tea where the water has to be boiling in order for the tea bag to diffuse or whatever is does. It just looks weird seeing "very hot water" on the instructions because when making hot drinks we're used to boiling the kettle.
