I really don't understand what all the fuss is about with guns. Mine were done with a gun, the holes are straight, it didn't hurt and they never got infected.

The majority of people do have their ear lobes (and cartilage = guilty x 3) with guns.

They are unhygenic (blood on the gun, as it's not sterilised, the earrings may not be properly sterilised), the earrings are so much more blunt than a needle and cause scar tissue and what not.

Needles are less painful, they pierce the skin with a quick sharp prick rather than a forceful bluntness being pushed through.

In all fairness there probably isn't a lot of risk using guns on lobes, but if you have the extra money go for the needles!

Personally I found the pain to be much worse with a gun than a needle. The needle pierced one also healed much quicker, and is straight, unlike the others, which are all at slight angles.

They shouldn't show you the needle if you ask them not to. Most piercers are experienced with dealing with people with needle phobias.

Don't get it done wtih a gun, they're nasty. For reasons that have already been explained over and over.

To be honest I cant remember if it hurt..though I can remember balling my eyes out. I was only 3 at the time. If you're going to get yours done make sure they're done at the SAME TIME. So therefore you don't have to go through the pain factor twice.

blackswan do you know if you wanted to get your ears pierced?

Reply 24

Gun piercings aren't straight, but for normal usage you probably won't notice (unless it's really bad). It's only if you want to stretch them or do interesting things that you're likely to notice

Didn't want my ears pierced but cousin bought me earrings for pierced ears for my birthday, she then got me drunk and took me to get them done (gun). Unfortunately when I sobered up I realised one was off centre and had to go back sober to have it redone. Needless to say I have since let the holes heal up as it wasn't my idea in the first place...I'm still grumpy that I can feel the lumps where it was done though.

Well I got mine pierced when I was 8 and they grew in. I just very recently (last year) got them pierced again, with a gun. I hardly noticed the first ear, it was quick and didnt hurt at all. but I think I knew what was coming for the second ear so the second ear hurt a little more, but it's not anything excruciating.

Hmm... from these comments it seems that it doesn't hurt at all. If you look back to my first post, I mentioned that one of my friends found it really painful; they're not going to hear the end of this!!

OP: I think you can really relax about it now.

Gun didn't hurt me at all. If you're getting it done in the cartilage, you should get it done with a needle, as there is a greater chance of the cartilage "beaking" with a gun.

Getting my Ears pierced tomorrow !!

Have a booked appointment,at a Salon - which does piercings.

Apprehensive but also quite excited. They use needles there - so will be squeezing Mum's hand so tight !!

i had mine done with a gun, that fires the earring through ur ear so fast that the earring pierces your ear.
it was fine. might have stung a little bit, but it was only a bit of discomfort

if some places use needles and others use the earring guns, you could ask which method they use and make your decision based on that

They told me - they use a Needle !!

Not keen on needles.:frown: If tomorrow i'm to scared, because of the needle - i'll look for a place with a gun.

I'm a wuss with pain and needles.

Want to get,my Ear Lobes pierced. But scared of needles.

Will it hurt ?

I got my earlobes pierced this weekend, and it didn't actually hurt any more than a pinch. I found the thinking about it was worse than actually getting it done, and now I am happy with them

Does the Needle, hurt more than the Gun ??

Absolutely, categorically do not get pierced with a gun. It is terribly traumatic for your ears. Needle piercing is the only way to go, it is less painful, more hygenic and you will heal a lot faster.

Piercing guns cannot be properly sterilised in an autoclave. This means that they are perfectly capable of passing hepatitis and other blood-borne pathogens.

Ear piercing studs are dull and tear through the body, causing unnecessary pain, longer healing time, and other possible complications. The gun forces a blunt stud through the skin, causing it to literally rip in order to make room for the jewellery. The short studs used also fail to allow for swelling, which is an essential part of the healing process. Not only this but the butterfly backs used on them trap dirt and bacteria.

Piercing guns frequently malfunction, often the stud will not be released from the gun and has to be removed using pliers. These pliers will usually not have been sterilised and tugging on a fresh piercing will cause more unnecessary pain. It is also fairly common for a stud to only pierce partway through the ear and for the "piercer" to either have to remove it and re-pierce or to try and push it the rest of the way throughby hand.

Most ear piercing studs are not made of materials certified as being safe for long term implant in the human body. Even when coated in non-toxic gold plating, materials from underlying alloys can leach into human tissue through corrosion, scratches and surface defects. This can cause mild to severe allergic reactions as well as toxic shock syndrome.

Well, i'm getting mine done with a Needle. :frown:

Although i hate needles & the thought of it scares me . It is obviously the best option. !

Reply 37

Yep needle is definitely the best option. Don't worry yourself about it. I've had 17 piercings done and they really don't hurt. It is over very quickly.
