If you want a town where there's actually stuff to do, go to Edinburgh. St Andrews is on the edge of Scotland, miles from anywhere worthwhile. Plus Edinburgh is a great city.

I think that is slightly unfair. Granted St Andrews doesn't have the thrills of the big city, but it isn't that isolated and it does have a vibrant social scene of its own (6000 students in such a small place is actually quite lively). Plus their IR department is very good.
go for an open day.

I'd take edinburgh.

well, i'm not too bothered about the social scene

the thing is that since edinburgh is a bigger uni, there might be advantages that i don't know about..

and yes, I think I'll go to the edinburgh open day next month, just to see how the city is like and stuff..
Don't do St Andrews. It's small, the town is pretty much dead-like, and the students seem to have a general demographic of 'rich white middle-class'.

As for the course - well, that's funky and interesting. Focus on terrorism in some modules, which is what this place is renowned for. A variety of lecturers who go from 'mad, insane and somewhat amusing' to 'oh my god, feminist theory earnest types'. It's a pretty cool course, not as theory-intensive as some.

Seems so... especially since everyone is describing St Andrews as a 'ghost town'

Now, I just need to find a cheap flight from prague to edinburgh.....
