I never took Computer Science at GCSE because we were never offered it.

All I can advise you to do is the opposite of what I did instead.

I took ICT.

In this day and age, no school should ever offer ICT but not Computing. So glad the government is attempting to turn the tables here but it can't come quickly enough!

Do it. I took computing at A level and loved every minute of it. We were never offered the chance to do computer science, so we instead all took ICT and wasted 2 years on excel.... I cannot stress how muxh fun computer science is, and how useful it is! Even if you take it no further than GCSE, it will teach you logic and critical thinking as well as practical applications of maths and physics! Its so worth it! It will be hard work but great

I'll talk about the programming aspect of it. Some people couldn't grasp the concept of programming and dropped out a week in. Others couldn't grasp the concept and carried on until the end, it didn't end well for most of them. Of course a smaller group didn't understand it at first but became better. I say take it but if you are struggling then I recommend switching subjects.

My opinion? Do it.

I'm awaiting my results but I've been predicted good things. Remember it's not just programming or some maths - the hardest bit for me was learning all the theory but if you enjoy the subject and ' embrace it ' it won't be too hard.

I LOVE programming and to excel in that bit don't be put off. Do some extra work out of class and you'll find when you do well in class that sense of euphoria you get is well deserved.

I wouldn't say it was hard but I found that the majority of others in my class did, it's something you need to enjoy or it'll become boring quite quickly. Find out what exam board your school does and find a syllabus online to see what you'd learn.

Typically you learn a wide range of things, I think that's why people struggle with it because you need to know quite a bit about a lot, it was my most comfortable subject but I still spent the longest amount of time revising it due to the amount I needed to revise. Most importantly ask the teachers what you'll learn and what's involved in the course, they'll be able to give you the most detailed answers. My exam board was OCR and this is what we did;

Coursework:
- Learned a high level language (Python) and assembly language (LMC)
- Programmed certain tasks and documented + explained them

Basics:
- The importance of computer systems and them being reliable
- Environmental/legal issues to do with computer systems

Hardware:
- The purpose and function of a CPU
- What impacts the CPU
- Binary, logic diagrams and truth tables
- RAM & ROM and their properties + uses
- Virtual memory
- Cache memory
- Flash memory
- Input and output devices
- Storage devices & secondary storage

Software:
- Utility programs (anti virus, firewalls, defrags etc...)
- Operating systems (OS)
- Different types of software (custom vs off the shelf, open source vs proprietary)

Data Representation:
- Units of storage (bit, nibble, byte, kilobyte, megabyte, gigabyte, terabyte)
- Binary conversions
- Binary calculations
- Hexadecimal storage and conversions/calculations
- Character sets (ASCII, unicode)
- Pixels, metadata and file types for pictures
- Storing sound digitally
- Quality of files

Databases:
- Database Management Systems and features
- What a database is
- Terminology for databases
- Data validation
- Relational databases

Networking:
- Hardware in networks
- Types of networks (topologies)
- LAN or WAN
- Terminology and security
- Protocols
- The internet, IP addresses and Domain Name Servers
- HTML
- Lossy and lossless compression
