    http://www.aqa.org.uk/qual/gceasa/qp...W-MS-Jun01.pdf Page 2. I don't get why 1 (a) (i) isomer 3 hasn't got a Br atom attached.

    Secondly why is 1 (a) (ii) isomer 1 called 2-bromo(-2-)methylpropane, why isn't it called 1-bromo, 1,1-dimethlyethane?

    1 a) (i) is wrong
    a) (ii) cus u start in the naming by identifying the longest chain. Which is a Propane chain. Then there is one Bromine group off the 2nd carbon atom, and one methyl group off it.

Isomer 1 has 2 carbon atoms in the longest chain though so how can it be propane (3 carbon atoms)?

    .......CH3
    ...........I
    CH3-CH3-CH3
    ...........I
    ........Br

Its like this, just drawn slightly differently, but has same effect. Any clearer?
    (ignore dots)

The three Carbons are The left one, the middle one, then either one from above or below central carbon atom. (in their pic)

The longest chain runs from top to bottom. They do things like that - sometimes around corners aswell - to try and catch you out.
