the most difficult personal statement to write...

i might add a poll once i've had a few suggestions.

what subjects have people done that had a really hard (or just unusual) personal statement..

i applied for maths and psychology and i think it is hard to right a ps for a joint degree- especially in subjects fairly unrelated. if i'd listened to my teachers i'd have just done one subject... but i think as long as you explain why you want a joint then i think you're ok, i just kept reminding myself that the admissions tutors were running joint honours degrees, they are going to be in favour of doing 2 subjects.

so suggestions... were you hard done by and why?

I would imagine that writing one for Medicine is an absolute nightmare when you think about the additional pressure to get it absolutely spot-on. Other than that I wouldn't really fancy attempting town and country planning, civil engineering ermmm.... computer science?!?

PPE - its hard to demonstrate in such a short statement about your interest in all three areas and their interdisplinary nature - well at least I think so!

I would imagine that delivering a passionate piece about each area is very difficult indeed. I think people who apply for different course types at different places have it the worst though, imagine trying to combine physics with politics!!!

haha, i can't talk on the maths bit, he can't afford an ipod (although he loves his mp3 player like a baby), he looks cute in a hat, i have enough dress sense for us both (and he's kinda into rock anyway so he seems to have a standard uniform of jeans and a band t-shirt) and i can cope with reruns of the simpsons... he's not actually too geeky *convinces herself*

unlike us mathsy people... hmmm with our lovely thick glasses, even worse dress sense, poor jokes, lack of social skills and love of rubbish music.... wow stereotypes are so fun

civil engineering isn't simply about bridges. there are other things that civil engineers deal with... dams, roads, shopping centres, draining, and other public infrastructure. it just so happens that whenever you have one of those competitions at school where its like "who can build the best bridge out of paper straws?" they always go "is anybody planning on being a civil engineer?". Its a bit like architecture, except you have to prove that the buiding you've designed is going to stand upright, and what materials are best. and, just like architects, civil engineers visit sites to pretend that they're "actively involved". i don't think they'd send you to uni for 4 years just to operate a digger.
sorry. rant over. my civil engineering p.s. was actually pretty easy, i thought.
but maybe because i threw in a lot of cheese (the impact on and relevence to today's society... blah blah blah)
i reckon with maths and psychology you should probably rant on about logical thinking and reasoning, no?
