I don't know about the ones from your list but I imagine Lampeter would be very peaceful. And from the pictures it has nice architecture.

This might make me sound like an 80 year old man, but I was just wondering which universities have a reputation for being quiet and peaceful?

I was originally taken with the idea of going to KCL, but with its central London location I wonder if it will be too much for me.

Which of the following universities are the most pleasant in terms of their environment? Also, which ones have the most classical architecture because I have heard that Kings is actually rather ugly, is this true? Once again this may sound ridiculous, but I feel that studying in such an atmosphere will be beneficial.

Here they are (rank them in order if possible)

Oxford
Cambridge
Durham
LSE:rolleyes:
Warwick
Nottingham
QMUL

How are any Central London universities going to make that list?

I don't think you can compare "peaceful universities." It's a pretty bizarre thread to be honest.

All universities are full of youth culture and therefore you will be able to find oasi of peace and hives of activity wherever you go.

But if you can't face the city lifestyle I definitely wouldn't bother with any London universities. By the way- LSE is just down the road to King's, so there is no difference between King's and LSE in terms of peace.

I would have thought a fairly peaceful place would be St. Andrews or something.

You can definatley put Brunel into that list.

I would say York/Durham/Exeter/Warwick... are "peaceful" compared to the london unis and big city uni's etc such as manchester/sheffield/leeds ....though to be honest due to every uni having a high number young students (obviously) then even at say York i can't imagine the Halls being very peaceful.

uhmm.
in comparison to the other unis, I guess that Oxford, Cambridge and Durham are relatively more "peaceful" just because they're not in a big city, and they generally have the older architecture.

why don't you just go and visit all the places?!

even in peaceful places, the student halls aren't going to be quiet at all.

I've visited Oxford. Of course, it's got lots of good architecture, but I wouldn't really call it very peaceful. Possibly more so than any London unis, but it's not like what you're thinking of. (Or at least what I'm thinking you're thinking of ...)

Plus don't forget about all the tourists...

Peaceful + students = no way.
Most unis have peaceful spots like libraries, chapels, prayer rooms etc. Most have greenery and pretty bits like lakes etc. Some are on campuses away from the business of city centres. But uni ife is not by nature peaceful!
For classical architecture - look at Oxford, Cambridge, Durham (parts of), Edinburgh, Bath. York, UEA and Warwick are concrete monstrosities near beautiful cities.
There are only two really quiet rural unis that I know of - Keele and Bath Spa. You will have to get on your bike and get visiting!

York is not peaceful, there is duck poo everywhere and the buildings are ugly. Definitely doesn't make me feel peaceful inside!

The architecture at the university is certainly not pretty, but I think the setting is quite nice with all the lakes. The city itself has very classical architecture.

I think universities like Oxbridge, St Andrews, Durham etc. are what you're looking for.
If you like London but don't want to be right in the middle of it all, why not Royal Holloway?

Warwick is pretty peaceful. At least it would be if you get yourself in a quiet area of halls. There's like countryside all round it... and the campus is a lot nicer than Yorks IMO!
Warwick's buildings are an insult to humanity.

Between Oxbridge I'd probably choose Cambridge, but I do like Oxford for being close to London. It's peace with noise close enough to visit.
I made a thread a while back about quieter universities, I think places like Bath and Bangor were seen as being quite peaceful.

From your list I would say that Durham's probably the most peaceful. Of course universities attract lots of young people and there will therefore be noisy areas, but that's not the point, I believe that some people can't always tolerate too much noise and need chill-out areas.

Cambridge is lovely, it's a decent sized place and has lots of good looking areas. The university architecture is beautiful, the river in summer is beautiful with people punting down it and there is a lovely grassy park area and bits where you can sit by the river. Wish I was brainy enough to go there!
the only place i havent visited is durham, but im thinking cambridge (or durham from what ive heard...)

Oxford and Cambridge are both architecturally nice, obviously. Oxford is pretty noisy though. The High Street is full of buses all the time (there seems to be more buses than cars). I haven't been to Cambridge but it seems to be a smaller town than Oxford, so you might like that. Some of the newer colleges are far from the town centre too, though you might not like the architecture of them. St. Andrews is probably quite quiet.

A place is as peaceful as you'll let it be.

One of the quads of my college (St John's Oxford) is, according to recent research, one of the quietest places in the country. Sure, the city itself isn't particularly peaceful but once you step inside the colleges you'd be surprised how quiet it is.
