Flat hunting in Glasgow- any ideas?

Hello!

Flat hunting in Glagow seems to be really difficult and anything offered for a two bedroom flat in the west end doesn't seem to be under 500. Notices in postoffices and newsagents don't seem to be the answer, since the prices of flats offered there are also about 500/month.

Does anybody know if there is a sort of unofficial "underground" market for flats? I have a feeling there must be. If so, how do you make contact?
2 bed in the West End for under £500?! Not likely! Most people I know are paying £300 a month for their rooms on Byres Road and the surrounding area - I'm paying £595 a month for a 2 bed in a new build on Argyle Street, and that's not expensive.

How on earth do you manage to pay that amount + eat? I mean that amounts to about 800-900 pounds (roughly 600 rent (all costs included??) + about 200 for food).
A student loan doesn't cover that, and you'd have to be working quite a bit to earn enough to subsidize the missing sum.

It may be the price that has to be payed, but I can't agree with it not being expensive, in fact I'd call it a cut throat price.

£500 would be darned cheap, u should take it and count urself lucky! i assume that you mean £500 for the flat so only £250 per room?

There are actually quite a few on the market for 500. I've now found out the uni also rents flats, at 230/room for a 3 bedroom flat (no extra living room), heating included. That I find ok, especially since the flats are 3 min from the uni.

Yeah, it's an absolute nightmare trying to find flats at the moment. However, if it's a flat for next year that you're after, a couple of the estate agents on Byres Road are making up a database of students who are looking for flats next year, and then sending out details of all suitable flats (from the tenants that'll be moving out at the end of the semester) in the next month or so, so there should be much more of a selection around about then.

I'm looking for a 3 bed flat at the moment, and the cheapest I've found is about £220 pppm. But I agree that rent in the West End is absolutely ridiculous!!

That sounds a good idea and I guess you are right, the flats will be coming on the market in the next 4-8 weeks when everybody remembers about moving out.
When I say 595, I mean 595 between me and my flatmate!

about £300 each is about average, according to the couple of agents i've spoken to, so that should be alright

If you start at one end of Byres Road and work your way down, there's at least 5 or 6 letting agencies (there's a lot of agencies on Byres Road that just sell properties but they may have a letting office elsewhere in the city)...there's also a couple just off Byres Road. Also, there's a newsagent's down near Partick Cross which has loads of ads for flats in the window

I do get the impression the market is picking up a bit, but I guess it will all be a mad rush in May and June when the year ends.
Has anybody got an idea if it is worth staying on till July in order to get a flat? What are the experiences of "seasoned flathunters"?

Edit: does the said newsagents have a name?

Probably. I can't remember it though. It's red. That's all I remember. Sorry

Haha. I need to actually find a flat and put down a deposit before I can even think about having my deposit withheld!!!

Edit: And to put down a deposit, I need to get a job. Speaking of which, I'm off to the job centre now. Meh. Can't be arsed with all this jobseeking :frown:

Meh, jobcentre...I both love and hate that place! I made an enquiry about a retail job one time there, advertising 5 pounds/hour, sales assistant, temporary over the summer, interest in football...sounds brilliant!!

...it was for the Rangers shop and I'm a passionate Celtic fan :frown:

(Also Nathan, we need to go out for a drink sometime! :p:)

Definately. It's been way too long! Just don't let me get into the same state as I was the night of the GUU Freshers' Ceilidh. Although, I think it'd be damn near impossible to get me back into that stage of drunkeness. I learnt my lesson

Aaaaaaaanyway, I'm still looking for a flat. It's such a ****ing nightmare!

:frown: Is the uni accommodation office no good? How much are you looking to spend anyways? I can look round some of the places Ollie and me tried if you remind me how many bedrooms you're after - terrible memory! :p:

The Uni accomodation office seems to be closed every bloody time I go up!! We're looking for 3 bedrooms, but there's a lot more flats coming onto the market at the moment, so we should get one soon

And you were funny at the Ceilidh! I think I'll get you smashed again on purpose. :ninja:

How charming and considerate ....just make sure that I get home this time, eh? :p:

I haven't been out for AGES, been ill for a bit and then no money and meh...want to get back in Curlers at some point for more Jaegerbull  Only Ollie can't drink Red Bull any more. There was an Incident. Regarding drinking lots of vodka because we'd run out of wine. He was ill for like a week!

Vodka/Red Bull is just not a good mix. Well, it is at the time, but the hangover afterwards is just ridiculous!

No, no-one's sorted yet, which is even more worrying 'cause that means we can't even crash on their floor or something 'til we get sorted out. I refuse to come back to Wolfson for another year. But yeah, we're really gonna get into searching for a place after everybody's back, so hopefully we'll all get sorted soon.
