Membership of a sub-culture often implies rejection of social norms and "the system".
If you feel the need to get involved with a marginal group of society, it often means that you don't feel to comfortable in the middle of society.

That in turn can imply that you reject the rules that society has set up.

If you act upon that rejection, you act against the norms or even the laws of society, and that could be called deviant or criminal behaviour.
