Assessment results that are 'subject to moderation' query

According to my tutor, the phrase 'subject to moderation' means that the assessment results are provisional until they are moderated by external examiners.

I was curious how could they moderate assessment results when they don't have a copy of our assessments. The assessments are given back to us, besides exams and in-class tests obviously. I don't think they have a copy of the assessments (e.g. essays, reports, etc...) either. All they have is an assignment feedback sheet with the mark on it for assignments, and marked exam and/or in-class test papers.
