EDM thread

I was going to make an EDM thread of my own but then I realised this thread was a thing and there are some really good discussions on here.

It's so nostalgic reading all these posts about what artists stood out last year ;-; so much seems to have changed this last year.

- Hardwell has turned to hardstyle and it really doesn't suit him (But I'm dying for Dr. Phunks remix of Apollo to be released, it's amazingggggg)
- Martin Garrix has turned to progressive, which does suit him.
- Tiesto continues to release mainstream EDM and make his old fans sad and his new ones happy.
- Spinnin' Records have turned to ABSOLUTE **** and Monstercat seems to be heading in the same way.
- Progressive is dying ;-;
- The Chainsmokers have completely blown up releasing chart toppers, i.e Roses, Don't Let Me Down & now Closer.
- DJ's known for progressive songs like Alesso, Zedd, The Chainsmokers have now started playing awful trap-like songs at festivals (Ultra 2016 is the perfect example of this, what the hell) because Hardwell did it first.
- Don Diablo is becoming better and more popular and I couldn't be happier, I'm going to see him at the end of October and I cannot wait.

One artist I really like atm is Illenium, he's got his own style of having a vocal melody with just a quiet instrument in the background before adding all the energy to the build-up/drop. If you haven't heard his remix of The Chainsmokers - Don't Let Me Down then GO AND LISTEN TO IT.

Overall it just seems we're losing all the incredibleness of EDM we've had over the last few years and deep house, future house and trap seems to be becoming the norm. What's happening anymore ;-; feel like there's a lot to discuss about it.

Don't listen to DnB as much as house genres but I've heard Love To Me and the remix of Strobe they just released and I completely agree, they need so many more views!
Proximity is a really good Youtube channel, you should check it out:h:

I've been subscribed to them for a couple of years now, arguably one of the best if not the best music channel out there right now, I love them. The only music channel I know of that hasn't changed it's content to fit in with a crowd.
Just wanted to give a heads up, I've completely stopped listening to Monstercat, Spinnin' Records, even Proximity (or at least most of Proximity). Each of these channels I've been subscribed to for ages. I unsubbed recently. My tastes have changed so much over the last 6 years, it's unreal. Then again, I'm only 18 so it's not too surprising. I've been listening to a lot more rap recently but EDM is still what I listen to predominantly. I've found more interesting electronic punk / noise rock stuff which I never knew existed, and am amazed at how ignorant and unaware I have been of the scene because there's some really quirky, experimental yet great production going on.

Flume's record is album of the year for me, but not by a long shot. Kaytranada's 99.9% is awesome, you guys should check that out if you want to try listening to something that's still generally house but with hip-hop, jazz and funk influences thrown together. It sounds great!

Currently waiting for Porter Robinson to drop something because apart from his Madeon collab I don't think much has happened since his record Worlds 2 years ago. I'm aware that Flume and Porter would appear on Proximity but their styles are still distinct and are just on a different level I feel to most if not all of the other artists on Proximity.

The most recently released Monstercat song I bought was Deeper Love by Botnek, released 9 months ago. Everything since then has been awful. I don't think I'll ever stop listening to Proximity tho <3

Listened to a couple of Kaytranada's songs bc currently procrastinating... wow... Your music taste has changed massively o.O

Tbh I feel like everyone is constantly changing when it comes to EDM. It's quite saddening really, wish it could just stay how it's been from the last couple of years up to now. I've been wanting to get into DJ'ing/EDM production for years now with Alesso and Hardwell being my main inspirations but now I just feel like by the time I actually get somewhere EDM will have moved on to something I hate and no one would be interested in what I'd have :frown:
Spinning is awful. The videos are all the same too. Scantily clad women raving. I'm so sick of big room house.

Really looking forward to seeing flume and above and beyond later on this year tho. Trance still remains my favourite edm genre.

I used to love the Big Room House that Spinnin' released.. like songs from Ummet Ozcan, KSHMR, Tiesto, Showtek, R3HAB.. New songs getting millions of views daily. Now you're spot on, their videos are pretty much porn. So sick of it. The problem with big room is 99% of the songs use the same scale, F Minor, so it's so hard to make anything which doesn't sound similar to anything else.

If you like Eden you should check out Stephen. He mixes electronic material with rock really well, and like Eden has a distinct sound himself (in my opinion).

Dude, seriously? You've been missing out haven't you?!

He released his debut album of a few months ago. It's on YouTube. I think it's just short of being stellar, it's a great album in my opinion. I'm surprised you haven't heard Sincerely, that's also a pretty popular track of this.

To be honest, it's important that music keeps progressing regardless of the scene or not before it becomes stale and predictable. I'm in favour in completely different EDM that redefines our own understanding of what it actually is. That's why as soon as something like Future Bass has become popular (and expect it to dominate EDM in the next few years, it's also a pretty vague term in my opinion), I'm already looking ahead. I've been producing for the last 5-6 years and as soon as I knew that isn't always about what's happening now I've improved massively in creativity and the quality of my tracks. I definitely think I'm a seasoned producer but I'm always up for learning other stuff. You should perhaps try doing the opposite of what you're doing and look even further ahead. You'll be amazed at the possibilities.

That Big Room garbage is still going? No offense to people that like that stuff, but it's some of the most simplistic, obnoxious and annoying genres that have dominated EDM in the last few years. I never liked it from the start, and never will.

Also, Flume was influenced a lot by Trance. He cites it as a great influence for the importance of melody in the vast majority songs in the genre.

I do try to create my own style but it's very melodic, and the current genres we have and will have for a long time, i.e trap, bass house, future bass, are not. I couldn't produce anything which is more about sound design than making a catchy melody, and I know EDM is all about designing new unique sounds, but my taste in music hasn't changed enough to develop to those genres, and I can't see that ever happening to me. I'm still madly in love with songs like 'Years' by Alesso and 'Never Say Goodbye' by Hardwell even tho they're both so out of date, because I feel like they're the perfect balance between melody and sound design. But, as you said, Future Bass will be taking over and my taste in music compared with Future Bass is chalk and cheese. Things like house melodies could be completely obselete by the time I get anywhere.

I have to totally disagree with that. Future Bass is definitely more melodic than most house genres lol. Trust me on that. I also loved Alesso's "Years" years ago, what a track. I remember it being absolutely amazing, a surge of energy invigorating your veins. That was great. The guy was my favourite artist from the beginning of 2013 to the end of the year after.

I like Future Bass but I don't love it, because now it's starting to suffer from the same problem in that it's starting to sound the same and the synth chords (low cutoff at the beginning of the notes) are getting eerily similar. Same goes for trap, despite being similar.

Who knows, your taste might drop in the underground and that could be a good thing, because it encourages more creativity and less commercial purpose.

Do whatever you feel like, make whatever you feel like. There's always a market for it, big or small. Just don't expect to make a living off it as much as what's popular nowadays. If your taste won't evolve, or change I think is a better word, that's not a bad thing. But, I will say that you are potentially denying yourself of something new that you may love that you'd never know. It's healthy to be open-minded and listen to a variety of music even outside of EDM. Accidents can be amazing things when it comes to listening to music.

Haha sorry, I've hardly ever listened to future bass (listening to a mix of it as i type this) it was just one of those genres I associated with "I've listened to 50 songs in this genre and not liked one, the genre sucks".

I don't know about underground music.. again, not listened to it as much but whenever I think of underground music the first thing which comes to mind is the Boiler Room, which I hate with a passion. Yes I do like how it encourages creativity and I do kinda wish I understood it more and the feelings with it (You probably meant something completely different lol, I'm hopeless outside of my tastes) but its just impossible to like, no energy at all.

There are songs I like which aren't EDM.. certain old rock songs (eg. Live Forever by Oasis) and a few chart songs, even a couple of classical piano songs like Ludovico Einaudi... I think for me it's all about the memories you have of the times when you heard and loved the songs and listened to them all the time, like listening to a song you constantly listened to when you were on holiday always reminds you of the holiday, or songs that you always used to play when driving in the summer or something... and songs like Years just work so well with those feelings, while the other genres just don't. I don't know.
