Goldman Sachs Legal Department 2nd round interview

Hi All

I've been invited for a 2nd round interview with GS's Legal Department. The interview format will be like this:

"The second round will consist of two competency based interviews and a group exercise. You will also have the opportunity to look around our offices and attend a networking session."

1) How much legal/IB knowledge do they expect? I’m doing a straight Law degree and had one 3-week vacation scheme with a commercial firm.
2) Will there be loads of technical questions, like "what is your view on protectionism in EU?"
3) Will there be brainteaser type questions, like "how many golf balls can you fit in the London underground?"
4) The group exercise - how do I make myself stand out if I'm quite shy/very polite and never interrupt people?
5) Finally, I have searched all possible sources of information on how the Legal Department is organised and what deals they’ve been involved in, but since it’s a back office support role, there isn’t a lot to go on! Any suggestions? (apart from GS homepage)

Any words of wisdom will be very much appreciated! Thanks
1) I doubt they expect much.
2) quite possibly, just go in prepared to a point but dont over-worry. They are a firm which will be very intwrested in financial situations and the EU is a big one.
3) I have heard stories of questions like that at invesmtne banks. One of my mates was given 40 minutes to work out how many payphones there would be in New York City and show his working...
4) Group exercise - not my speciality, but make sure you get some points across as you're just going to have to. Don't let the more confident people just talk over you with your own points. However, don't hold back points in the discussion phase with your team that might come before the negotiation (if it is a negotiation..) as this can look like bad team practice and focusing on yourself too much.
5) They're basically in houlse lawyers... I have no idea, sorry. They instruct out all their big work I would imagine.

Goo dluck.

Hey,

I also got through to the second round, but have since accepted elsewhere so am not going. I guess they will probe further as to why you're interested in in-house and what you think the differences are etc? I also didn't find much of use on their website! Good luck!

Hi there

Is this for the legal analyst position at GS? Have they finished all their interviews then? I still haven't heard anything a part from the 'we will contact you when a suitable position comes up'.

Any updates would be great. Thanks

Nope. Decided not to go down that route two years ago.
