If I could steer this topic a bit, whats people's experience in dating people (foreigners) without perfect english? Is it very problematic?

My g/f is an ex pat American.
Shes lovely although her use of "english" is sometimes interesting.
Wouldn't change her for the world though. I think her accent and dialect is cute. Its part of what makes her special.

Really, you think it's cute? I've been freaking nervous about becoming an American expat myself in September, mostly because I thought no boys would want to date me cause of my accent, which I find incredibly obnoxious. But I'm glad to hear that because the Brit boys I saw while visiting were a knockout! Where is your gf from? I'm from California so I have a bit of a newscaster accent but not quite that nasal.

Do Americans really count as foreign? I know they do in the strct sense of the word but they are already very similar to British people in many ways!

You need to chill about your accent. He will likely find any differing aspects of his girlfriend cute, the accent I'd imagine happens to be of the more obvious variety. Everybody loves a bit of different, your accent will definitely not tend to hinder you.

My girlfriend was born in London, grew up in Italy, moved back over here when she was about 6 or so.

Soo she has elements of Italian culture in her, but I suppose I wouldn't really class her as foreign.

SHAC attack!
Anybody got a foreign partner? If so where are they from?

German bf  and while he does have a very slight German accent, his English is better than the average English native, as is his knowledge of grammar and vocab lol. It's an amusing factor we noted that foreigners actually tend to be better at English than the English themselves

As for whether there'd be problems with dating people without perfect English - well, my opinion is - if you like the person for his/her personality, you'll gonna grow to love his/her accent, aren't you? And you wouldn't let such a petty thing get in the way. There will be problems of frustration perhaps, cus sometimes my bf gets frustrated with my German (since I'm learning it) cus sometimes he just doesn't get why certain things are difficult.

My bf is Norwegian. Amazing English skills though. I reckon if you didn't know he was Norwegian before you met him you wouldn't know he was foreign!

Why are people posting anon on this thread, are they ashamed of having a foreign partner or something?

My partner's French (from the south of France, specifically). No language problems as such, although my French isn't perfect and his family doesn't speak English, so I can't understand everything they say. His English is perfect though (or near enough) as he lived in England for 18 months. We communicate using French and English, whichever one we feel like  We've been together a little over 2 years and we want to get engaged but can't as he doesn't want to have to borrow money to buy me a ring. All in good time

i guess i'm my bf's 'foreign' girlfriend. He likes my accent though  but he does think i use funny words sometimes. Aw well. He gets over it

My boyfriend grew up in Italy, then moved to England when he was 5/6ish - it's odd, cause his English is now much better than his Italian! Still see him as 'foreign' though, and we do get the odd 'interracial relationship' comment as I'm excruciatingly pale whilst he's got a deep year-round Mediterranean tan! Very unfair :frown:

my fiance is Peruvian. His English isn't very good- he cant have a whole conversation, but when he says anything in english his accent is so cute  Luckily, I am almost fluent in Spanish so we don't have communication issues

my BF is Italian  HOT HOT HOT  and very kind-hearted.

Hehe, I like quite a few American girls! However you may unfortunately be right about the accent if it's a very strong valley girl accent :p:, I'm sure after a while here if you do have one it'll tone down!
