How does clearing work - 2016?

Like, if you do have offers for next year but a course is available that you like such as Radiography, then can you pick it even if that's not what your personal statement is based on? But your grades match the criteria, thanks?

I think I get you:
Situation 1:
Let's say you apply for X,Y,Z,S,T
You pick X as your firm and Y as your insurance
In August you get your results and don't get into X or Y.

You can then use clearing to apply for other unis A,B,C,D etc.

Situation 2:
You apply after 30th June and get placed straight into clearing

Situation 3 (Your question):

You apply for X,Y,Z,S,T
X and Y are your firm and insurance respectively.
You get the results in August and X (or Y) accepts you, but you look at university A and see a course you like.
You can ask X (or Y) to release you to clearing and then apply to A.

Regarding your PS question, yes this is possible but you would have to:
A) Match the entry criteria
B) Be prepared to explain why you wanted to change your subject area from your original choice
C) Be prepared to (maybe) write a new PS

(@Minerva can you please check what I have written here? To make sure it's right. )

Pretty much - only to add that in scenario 3 you'd be well advised to find out if uni A is willing to make you a Clearing offer before asking to be released by uni x (or Y).

When you are in Clearing you can apply for any course where you meet the entrance requirements. However, you would need to be ready to persuade the admissions tutor that you were really sure about your new course choice, and in a vocational subject like Radiography this might be more tricky, given that Clearing is a much faster process that doesn't allow much time for interviews and the like.
