1 + nx + ...
as u put, u are confusing this formula with another one which u use in p2

If I may make a suggestion:
For integration by parts there is a way to remember where to give priority in selecting u. It goes:
L ogarithms (e.g. lnx)
I ndices (e.g. x^2)
A lgebra (e.g. x)
T rigonometry (e.g. sinx)
E xponentials (e.g. e^x)
Given a product of two functions to integrate by parts, u is ideally the function higher up this priority order.
My teacher uses "latte" (sp!) to remember it. -
