I wouldn't say the city is very diverse at all. In fact Sheffield has one of the highest % of "White British" people in England (91.2%). The university, however, is pretty diverse and I know quite a few people from different countries and cultures.

actually the city is pretty representative of the national picture

Sheffield White (All) - 91.2%
National White (All) - 90.9%

Sheffield Mixed - 1.60%
National Mixed - 1.30%

Sheffield Asian - 4.55%
National Asian - 4.57%

Sheffield Black - 1.78%
National Black - 2.30%

Sheffield Chinese - 0.42%
National Chinese - 0.44%

Sheffield Other - 0.40%
National Other - 0.43%

But yes compared to somewhere like London where just 59.7% are White British, it could be a bit of a culture shock, but it is still pretty diverse. And the uni itself will be even moreso with international students and a whole melting pot of students from up and down the country.

bumping this -- would like more responds to this thread.

Is the City diverse?
and (probably more importantly) does Sheffield University have ethnic diversity?

i live in London so I like a good mix of folks. how often does anyone see oriental, black, asian people in the uni/city?

Oh yeah, it's definitely pretty diverse. I would say that the Union political scene does seem to be disturbingly white though. And don't let that put you off - come and get involved and change it.

hey man, were you reply to me or the OP? lol.

Anyway, can any current sheffield students tell me if there's a good number of oriental, black, asian people etc?

coming from London, there's definitely a crap load of mixed cultures and ethnicities.

That are a lot of oriental people around the university. There are also a fair number of black and asian people, although centered in particular areas of the city. The university itself is certainly very diverse.

cool beans. Hmm, i figured there'd be a lot of oriental people because Sheffield has a large department devoted to East Asian studies right?

and if there's a healthy mix then that sounds great to be honest. But anyhoo I just don't know what to expect but im banking on seeing a mix of all kinds of folks.
