Architecture at UCL (the Bartlett)

Seeing as no-one picked up on it in the uni section...

For those who have applied or who are studying at the Bartlett already, what are the merits of studying at UCL?

Having got a load of offers I'm just trying to get it straight in my own mind what the relative merits of each course are.

Any thoughts as to what UCL 'represents'? What's London like as a city for a student? I have this rather grim impression of living like even more of a pauper due to Londons cheery prices, and having a severe lack of a social life as a consequence. Career prospects? Would we be spoon fed into Rogers et.al. and being fought for by international companies? Teaching emphasis (ie technical/artistic)? Accomodation? Learning environment? Hours? How many people are in a year?

I know they gush on their website as all institutions do but I'm intrigued to know what different peoples interpretations are.

Any thoughts most welcome...

people generally tend to slate ucl for being very up themselves, but imo if you're the best then you're not going to hesitate in making sure people know about it. i found everyone there very nice (including christine cutbush haha) and am very excited to start in september. although it's a bsc it has a strong emphasis on the artistic side of architecture, and it's totally evident within the student's work and the teaching units. there's 90-100 people in the first year i think which i was told drops quite a bit as you go on, ha. reassuring. when i visited the bartlett it looked like a very relaxed, very bohemian kind of working environment, where it's ok to be messy and experimental with your work. that's the impression i got anyway. the accomodation is spread out in the surrounding areas of the main ucl buildings, some are five minutes walk and others a few tube changes.

as for london, it's definately manageable to go out on a lower budget, i think when you're living with students who maybe are more familiar to london than yourself you won't be sucked into the most expensive places as they'll know what's cheap and what's not. i go to london quite a bit, and on the average night out (bars, small gigs) i probably spend about £20, but it's different for everyone. my sister used to manage on £100-150 a month living cost in central london at med school, and she could afford to go out AND eat. ha. but as archi students we're going to have to face not going out as much as our '15 hour a week' humanity buddies. it's just a fact of life.

Many thanks to you both - the PDFs you attached seem a world away from the mundanity of the school syllabus... All that fun ahead of me.

Does anyone know what the interview entails? I assume we're not meant to bring anything with us, more a case of looking over the Task and discussing the personal statement and the additional thing we send?

Got over a month to let it stew over in my brain! Guess they can afford to take their time.

I have been asked to take a portfolio with me to the interview

Did you submit the task as well...?

I'm still waiting on the 'additional letter' which follows the email.
Reply 5
yes i submitted the task as well, just wondering for anyone out there who has had an interview how much shall I take for my portfolio?
it's pretty short and informal with lots to get through so don't take a massive amount, just maybe some sketchbooks that show thought processes and 5-10 key pieces that you can talk about.

The problem is my sketch books are huge and really thick, so i don't know if i shoul dtake one and then some other pieces or what really because taking more than one, well even taking one on the train could be a fun task.

Lol, na im doin a foundation at Chelsea College Of Art And Design (best choice eva!) yeh, so i gt my A-levels already. A-art, A-sociology, B-design (product), so ill be a year older than you lot, lol. Ima prob go wiv westminister as my insurance, i have a friend there doin architecture and he is enjoying it alot, i know alot of people in kingston, bt nt doin architecture and they dont really like the university but love the party life. Its really up 2 u, visit them both and decide which is best for you. Also westminster has the best student bar ever, im there like at least once a week (thats the campus near Baker st, where they do architecture amoungst other things). Although im chosing westminster mainly becoz its easy for me, as its not that far from me and i have friends goin there, and im sure many people who go westminster dont like it. 100% a personal choice.

I still have heard nothing. Am a bit off with UCL after the whole thing about not getting their emails and the woman being rude to me.. I still want to know though!
Right I realise this is kind of late, but I can't find the form for the UCL second personal statement! I've typed it up, so it's not like I've lost all my work, but I would be very grateful if someone could scan in a blank copy of the sheet for me!
I know it was stupid to lose it, and I usually keep everything safe so I can't for the life of me remember where I left it.
If you can, I'll be really grateful [you may get a positive rep - I'm that desperate at the moment!]
Thank you!!

i would if i could but i dont have a scanner! are you hand writing your ps or sticking in a typed copy? i was going to hand write it
im hand writing it - just typed it first so i wouldnt make a mistake!
i was wondering if theyd mind if I wrote on a blank piece of paper and attached my photo...any ideas?!

oo i just had a brainwave jenny-anne! please please please could you just send me in a word doc or even in a PM the writing thats on it, so i can put it together in a word doc, that way it should look less obvious!!
it would help me so much!
thanks! x

ok right, a few things just so its perfect!!! (im a terrible perfectionist) i believe the font is done in whatever this is and about this size and the font for the big title was how i have done it. the box they give you to put your photo in is about 5x5mm and is about in line with 'bartlett school' if you get me. the line goes right across the page as do the dots after 'name'. the dots after 'date of interview' reach just over half the page. 'continue overleaf' bit is about 5mm from the bottom of the page. oh and also the paragraph beginning 'as the space provided...' is about 105mm in width and then the photo box is like 5mm after that. all this probably doesnt make any sense!!!!

hope this helps!!!
