I'm a passionate musician, have written many of my own songs, guitar grade 6, theory grade 5..... yet I never studied GCSE Music. Do you find that odd?

Perhaps then again you made the right decision if you have a home grown talent then a GCSE in Music is simply irrelevant.

Not odd at all. GCSE isn't particularly high level, so you wouldn't need to be 'great' at playing musical instruments to be at GCSE level, in my opinion. Your very lucky though, if it is a genuine passion, you've found something that really interests you at a youngish age. That's really lucky, most people grow old without knowing what their real passion in life was. Sometimes conventional education isn't the best way too learn, it breeds normality and unoriginality. It's a good thing to do it on your own.

I do music production and I can't even play an instrument. Not to an adequate standard at least for me. The Beatles didn't even know how to read score sheets or whatever they're called if I can remember correctly.

Nope. I have piano ATCL diploma with theory at grade 8, and have absolutely no interest in taking gcse music along with my other subjects next year a lot of my friends are in similar situations as well - it doesn't matter!
