Indian food

So I am pretty much all fixed up for my move to Leeds - Headingley here I come - but there are some things I don't really know the location of relative to me. The main concern for me is the presence of an Asian supermarket. I don't mean Asian like the one(s?) down by Vicar Lane - although I will be buying lots of stuff from there - I mean places to get spices and other ingredients so I can pretend I can cook as well as my mother.

I have been spoiled in Manchester by it's "Curry Mile" (Rusholme), which is probably larger than the Chinatown in the city centre, and will need a replacement of sorts in Leeds.

Any clues?

If it makes any difference (maybe people know loads of places) I am very close to the Headingly Arndale.

Any advice will be gratefull recieved.
Do you mean Asian as in curries and that sort of thing?
Where I live, Harehills, it's FULL of asian food places. You can buy loads of spices and halal meat and all sorts here. Harehills has a very large Asian community (not Chinese Asian, but Islamic Asian) so there are loads of shops to cater for their sort of cuisine.

It's about 15 minutes from Leeds city centre on the bus - just catch the number 49, 50, or 50A bus outside 'If' bar in the Light on the Headrow, and tell the driver you want to get off just past Kwik Save in Harehills.
Ask him to tell you where to get off.

Once you get off the bus, just have a look around the area. There's lots of places to buy spices. If you get stuck, just stop a passer by- people will tell you where to go I'm sure.

I'm sorry there's nowhere closer to Headingley though that I can think of for that kind of thing.

I suppose that I should have said something about Indian food or cooking curries really!

That's exactly what I'm looking for. It might not be a big deal for me to have to travel though. I already have a fairly well stocked selection of spice tubs - I just need to know where to go to get refills and new items every now and then. I can always try and get more organised about it and buy lots of ingredients at once in advance to reduce the number of journeys. I was in the habbit of getting HUGE bags of rice from the places round here, but the Asda basmati is actually good enough (home delivery rules!). It's all the spices and stuff that they are rubbish for....

If anyone does know of such places closer to Headingley it would be mighty helpful. I might even offer someone some home cooked curry for their insight*... closest place wins

Could try around hyde park to be honest, there's loads of little shops that sell a mixture of stuff, one close to me always has piles and piles of different spices, there's an international supermarket near the royal park pub, never been but sounds quite promising.

Coolio!

Thanks for the info. Will check that out when I am next in Leeds. I hope that will be some time soon for me to collect my keys for my new place

All the pieces are falling into place now

Yep, the one next to royal park (Abu Bakar) has tons of indian/arabic type cooking ingredients, it'd be about a 20 minute walk from the Arndale centre. Easiest way would be to get on the 56 bus and get off at the stop next to the pub and it's right there.
