Hey, I saw on a program the other day which included the diagnosing of someone with diabetes - and they mentioned: excessive peeing, constant tiredness, weight loss, and being quite thirsty...
I think I probably have all of these things, but does this necessarily mean I might have diabetes?? I'm too scared to tell parents coz they'll make me go to the doctor and probs get me to take a blood test which I'm petrified of...
They are all symptons of diabetes, but it does not mean you have it. I was also having a lot of these symptons plus other symptons not mentioned like faintness etc a while back, and i went to my doctor and had a few tests and they found that i had iron deficeny anemia.
It could be anything, how long have you had it, i would say if it has not gone after 2 weeks then definlty see your doctor.
oh I've had these things for longer than 2 weeks... i'm just scared that I'll have to do blood tests and things... and i know that's stupid if i want to know if anything's wrong...
Just go to your doctor, and then you wont be worrying about what it is, you may be nervous, but everything will be over and done with before you know it!
There are loads of things with those symptoms, anaemia certainly is a common one. But look at it this way, it is better to get tested now and know for sure and have one needle, than to leave it and be seriously ill and have to have lots of them. If you are diabetic and it can't be controlled by diet then you will have to inject yourself, which is something you would have to get used to.

what do people think??
Surely you either have them or you don't? If your peeing was excessive, you would know about it, as you would if you had extreme thirst too. If you only 'probably' think you have these things, maybe you're just trying to fit your slight symptoms to the condition? How about explaining a bit more about why you think you have these symptoms....

ok, i only said probably because i didn't want to seem dramatic - i don't think i'm fitting symptoms to the condition, i was quite wary of these things before i heard it on the tv...
well the whole excessive peeing thing - i keep needing to go to the loo, and then when i do, i never feel like i'm finished and that i still need to go... but in reality i don't... if you get me?
i'm generally quite a thirsty person anyway so that kind of explains itself
i get tired really easily - despite the fact that i get plenty of sleep, not too much, not too little - about 8 hours-ish... and often get tired right after i eat, but maybe that's normal...
I'm not 100% sure but I think they can rule out diabetes with a urine test but they need a blood test to diagnose it. If you're lucky you might just need a urine test.
It’s better to get checked than risk having a serious condition plus all the worry wont be doing you any good. What about taking a friend, bf/gf, parent etc to hold you hand while it done.

I have type one diabetes myself, and alot of my friends ask me about diabetic symptoms.
Because symptoms for diabetes can be a bit ambiguous, it's difficult to say whether the symptoms you're describing automatically mean you have diabetes or not. The problem is that things such as excessive thirst, needing to go to the toilet alot, being irritable and being tired alot of the time aren't exclusively diabetes-related, but are often linked to high hormone activity during puberty. Alot of people see adverts for diabetic symptoms and begin to worry themselves into thinking that they might have the condition, whereas the reality is that about 75% of them have nothing to worry about.
The other problem is that because diabetic symptoms vary so much from diabetic to diabetic, it's difficult to say whether you are indeed suffering from the condition. My dad has type one diabetes as well, and the kind of things he goes through when he has low blood sugars differs to what I go through entirely.
By excessive urination, this means needing to go to the toilet hourly, and producing extremely high volumes of urine. Excessive thirst means being able to get through several bottles of water in a couple of hours. A little bit of irritability is not what diabetic mood swings are like: it's more like a hormonal bomb going off in your head and wanting to mutilate anyone who is even trying to help you out. Ask yourself, critically, if this really does apply to you.
If you're still suspicious, you really do need to see your doctor. Blood tests aren't bad at all (trust me, I do 4 a day ). If you really are phobic about blood tests, you can ask your doctor for something called Ketosticks. With these, you simply have to urinate on the stick, and it will detect whether or not you have a high concentration of ketones in your bloodstream. If so, this is a definite indicator of diabetes. However the blood test is the most reliable and accurate test - just close your eyes and get it over with!
All I can say is that most people who think they have diabetes don't. Even if you do, the medicine they have these days makes it so manageable to live with, provided you have self-control, that it's not an awful condition to live with. Get a blood test if you truly think you might have the condition, but just bear in mind that high hormonal activity can often be deceptive as far as tricking the body into provoking diabetic symptoms.
Hope this has been of help - if you have any specific questions feel free to PM me.
Does anyone know how high the sugars in your blood must be before you get diabetes? I got something like 4.9. That's was when i went under a 18 hour fast for the test.

Very difficult to say. The "normal" range for most non-diabetics is between 4-8, but if you've just eaten 16 Mars bars and drunk 25 bottles of Lucozade, blood glucose level is obviously going to be alot higher than normal

Normal blood glucose is between 4 and 8 so that sounds fine
