My suggestions:

1. Buy a Mac. OS X is the best thing since sliced bread. I am not kidding. It combines a fantastic UNIX base with a fantastic GUI.

2. If you don't do that, buy a good PC laptop from a company which will sell you one without Windows. If you can find a company that will offer you a good laptop without Windows, you should be able to save yourself a fair amount of dough. Download Linux (Debian, Mandrake, Gentoo if you're a masochist), install.

Just avoid Windows - it's a pile of crap.
