Clubbing - advice from those in the know

Hi
I'm going out clubbing next weekend with some friends. Its my first time and I''m a bit anxious about what to expect. Firstly I don't know what to wear. I know its hot in clubs but it will be cold walking there etc. Is there normally somewhere to put your coat? Also i'll need a bag with phone, money etc. Can you leave it somewhere for dancing etc. or do you just keep it with you? Apart from the dance floor will there be places to sit down and chat. Any advice would be brilliant as I want to have a good time but I don't want to look out of place.

Most clubs have a cloakroom to put your coat but they often charge you for this. Personally I pay it so I don't have to worry about my coat all night. You can also leave your bag in cloakrooms but I find that a bit of a pain cos u usually want whats in your bag while in the club. Therefore I keep my bag on me or put everything in my pockets. People wear all sorts of clothes to clubs. I usually wear a shortish skirt & a normal top. Otherwise I wear jeans & a nicer top but its up to u & does depend on where u r going. Ask your friends wot they are wearing maybe?

Most places have cloakrooms (normally about £1.50 to leave you coat for the night), I keep my bag with me as I want my purse, phone etc with me.

Generally there are chairs/tables around the place where you can stand and chat (but its normally too loud for much of a conversation.)

The club I usually go to is £1 per item in the cloak room. I keep my wallet and phone on me, but am a guy so have the advantage of wearing trousers. I usually take a coat with me and leave it in the cloakroom - you'll appreciate it afterwards.
Some nightclubs don't let guys in wearing denim or trainers.
(You don't have this problem with rock/alternative clubs though, they are much more easy going  )

I assume you're a girl though as you mentioned a bag.
If I were you, I'd put my coat in the cloakroom but keep my bag on me. Don't take a bag that you have to have in your hand all the time, because it gets annoying after a while if you're holding drinks and dancing. Get one that you can put over your shoulder if possible - it gets it out of the way.

Don't even think about freezing your arse off and not taking a coat, though, just to save on the £1 or so it costs for using the cloakroom. I see girls doing this ALL the time (usually just because they think a coat doesn't look good with their outfit), and believe me, I'd rather pay the quid and have my outfit temporarily covered up, than look as freezing as they do.
I think there are even girls who have died of hypothermia doing this (I heard it on the news or something a long long time ago).

And yep there are usually places to sit and chat, but everybody tends to grab the chairs so you'll more than likely have to look around for one for a while and dive on the first available one! It's hard to talk in nightclubs - you have to shout.

that's fine for a rock club, but if she's going to a townie club she's gonna wanna get more dressed up than that.

nah, works anywhere.
some places won't let you in wearing a hoodie though will they? i know where i live most clubs wont let you in if you're wearing a hoodie. i'd check if the venue has a dress code and then you know what not to wear

I'm totally with you though - gimme a t-shirt, baggy jeans, a hoodie, and chuck me in a rock club! Much more my kinda thing

well yeh, me too, but each to their own. If the OP is going to a townie nightclub, she's probably going to want to wear clothes that are going to fit in.

nah you should never aim to fit in - stand out from the crowd and be an individual.

Aha but the OP said she "didn't want to look out of place".

Most girls get done up in short skirts and straighten thier hair. It is usually really hot in clubs and cold outside, so if I were you I would bring a coat and leave it in the cloakroom. I hear those little bags you can just put over your shoulder and the opposite hip are good. Its not a complicated proccess really being in a club. People drink and dance. Stumble outside, intoxicate themselves, get with unattractive strangers in a frenzy of emotional, binge-drinking culture. Be careful getting home too.

Places that have strict dress codes are generally not worth going in my opinion - an seem to charge so much more than places without strict dress codes.
lol this has turned into a debate about the quality of clubs - come on now - the girl was only asking for a bit of advice. If she's going with her friends, more than likely she won't have sole decision over which club they go to.

I normally wear jeans or short skirt and a top of some kind. Last night I did the dredded sin of short skirt and strapless top! God I got more male attention then ever before, and I don't want/wasn't looking for it!

stick to the rule of body or legs on show!

I don't take coats to clubs with me but my fave is only a short distance away and I never feel the cold coming or going!

I just wanted to point out....the dress code at clubs in London is great. I'm from NY and I actually avoid clubs there because of the random and annoying dress code requirements. At a minimum they won't allow people in with jeans, sneakers, a non-collared shirt and it just gets worse from there. Its not as if I plan on dressing like a slob and going to a club....but it gets annoying when you have to constantly evaluate whether or not they'll let you in at a particular club with what you're wearing. I generally spend all my time in places like CBGB's (RIP) so I don't exactly have the wardrobe to go clubbing in NY.
Granted some UK clubs have some rules....but in NY it just gets retarded. It also seems like UK clubs are much less expensive overall. A major club in NY is like 30 dollars to get in and a beer is like 15 dollars....the London clubs I've been to are kind of expensive, but not nearly as bad as any NY club.
I went to Fabric last fall when Goldie was spinning and it was really fun.

They look hot though, much better than scruffy hoodies, people who make an effort and dress up are instantly more attractive than those who make no effort
