How much can losing weight change your life?

Hmm, so I was thinking this. Last June, I decided bugger being unhealthy and fat, I want to become slim and toned, like these fighters I see on television, it was literally within 2 days of thinking this I joined a kickboxing club. I remember at the end of my first lesson I nearly throw up, I could hardly walk and this last 3 days, I couldn't even move properly. Any way, in 9 months I lost 4 stone and my body type right now is very slim, toned with big shoulders, back and arms. And I am amazed how much my life has changed... in my opinion because of this.

I feel ALOT more confident for one, I can walk around topless and be proud rather than nervous with a baggy T-shirt on, I have a girlfriend I love - who I hear call me 'sexy' a lot - words I never thought would be used to describe me, I have alot more friends - maybe because I look better or because I am more confident - not sure, and I do a sport which people love to hear about - I tell people I do cage fighting and they just want to hear about it.

I am just wondering if a simular thing has happened to other people? I pretty much went from being lonely and being bored in my room all day, to having a lot of friends / a stable relationship and a ton of happiness. My other question is how much does your weight matter in life?

P.S. Anyone looking to lose weight quick, just ask... I can tell you how I did it and it is really, really easy. There is no trick to it... seriously.

Its not just losing weight.

Gaining weight can cause a big impression on your life as well. Confidence boosters are great and your story is very inspiring.

I'm currently gaining weight, 8 and a half to 11 stone and I want to gain more!

I'll tell you how I feel once I reach my goal

Hi,

I second what you say. I had previously been quite overweight (upto grade 8) and then started going to gym and caring about my fitness. Suddenly I started making friends, feeling better about life in general, and generally enjoying things.

Then I moved to the UK and was out of school for a year. I ate whatever I wanted, played computer games, and put on a lot of weight.

Finally I started school again and didn't really fit in - I was seen as too geeky and wrapped up in myself (with good reason, I was doing seven GCSEs in 5 months including all the coursework).

Starting my A-levels I decided to get back to gym and voilà, I immediately started making more friends, having more fun, and being a better person. Hey, I've even got a girlfriend now!

So if you feel you're overweight or unfit, do something about it - it makes a massive difference.

- Just my random thoughts ,

- me.

Oh, the other thing is. I always used to be known as weak and you know, not very noticed. But since I have been cage fighting that totally changed, it is really weird how different people treat you because they know you are a 'cage fighter'. It just shows people who talk crap to people often only do it because they think they can win fights, etc.

I would say changing your weight can make one hell of a difference to your life. Since last january I've lost about 2 stone and its stayed off. I go to the gym regularly and have made loads of new friends and people don't seem to see me in the same light. For I while it annoyed me that losing weight made people I'd known for ages suddenly like me but I realised that in losing the weight I gained a lot of confidence and became more appealing to people in that way. Good on you for losing 4 stone, it takes a lot to lose that amount of weight you should be proud of yourself!

I think that losing weight/gaining weight, whatever you want to do can make a huge difference to your life, usually by increasing confidence dramatically.

However, i think its important to stress that its not only body image that can make you happy (i know none of you were saying that, im not having a go or anything!). I think its quite sad when people get to a stage when they become obsessed and think they can only be happy when they are a certain size/shape and then when they get there, they find theyre not happy and then cahnge their goals etc.

For me, it's made a huge difference, and while I'm still in the process of losing weight, I've lost over a stone and can wear clothes I couldn't fit into or dream of wearing less than a year ago. Tonight for example I'm wearing a skirt! Yes, a SKIRT! Must be a blue moon...

You can't spot reduce fat, you can only do cardio and hope to lose fat in general.

Anyway I share a similar story, OP. I have lost 4.5 stone in the past year and I feel absolutely fantastic. At least 10x as confident. I realise now just how much I hated myself for being what I was. My life is completely different. Shifting the weight has been the hardest thing I've ever done but also the most rewarding. I still have another stone to go to reach my target of 9 stone. It has certainly changed my life and certainly for the better. I would never have been happy the way I was.

It's really not hard, you need to do around 4 hours of exercise 2 times a week for the first 3 months. After 3 months bump this up to between 6 and 10.

DO NOT EAT: Bread, crisps, choclate, coke, butter, cereal, etc, etc. Basically you are cutting a lot of carbs from your diet.

DO EAT: Chicken and other meats, Fish, Rice, etc.

Make sure you are eating around 1600 to 1800 calories.

You'll lose around 2/3 pounds a week at that rate. My most was 5 pounds in a week, which was when I was training for a kickboxing fight mind.

It changes your life entirely. I was always fat, then I lost a load of weight and felt brilliant, I was confident and happy...

Now I've got CFS, been stuck in bed for months and it went back on. I feel disgusted with myself and can't stand my appearance.

Believe me, it impacts your life incredibly.

Yup that's what I did. Wish i actually looked nicer though :p: I am chronically terrified of wearing even a sleevless top :frown:

Curiously enough, OP, I've been doing Muay Thai (thai kickboxing) for about a year and a half now, so I know what the training regime is like. I've recently gotten into running (for pleasure) and have found that I dance rings around the guys and girls I was fighting with when I was a n00b (not saying I'm a better fighter, but I don't get as tired as them ); because I took the fitness seriously. I'm in the OTC too, which is a great boost, so instead of being the guy who's being shouted at to get a "****ing move on" and "come on, you can do it!" (like last year), I find I'm the one doing that now.

I've become more confident, true, but I can't say I've made new friends and stuff. I'm still the shy quiet bloke I was before, except that I know that I could **** anybody over in a fight. I guess I'm just not a violent person.

Spot on OP, Loosing weight makes a hell of a difference. Trouble is, I hate exercise in most forms, but I force myself to do some.

My story is I lost about 2 stone over the summer and felt great about it, ok I was still 16 and still fat, but I felt ten times better and had all the confidence you could want. Since I came back to uni Ive put it all back and more though dammit. Currenty I do a 20 minute jog each day, 60 sit ups and 20 press ups and I'm trying to work up. My eating is... erratic. Some days I won't eat alot, others I will eat loads, it just depends. I think food is where the problem lies currently though! Average day entails 3 or 4 bits of toast for brekkie, 2 sarnies and a chocolate bar for lunch and then something with mash and beans or a jacket potato and a tin of fruit. I don't snack if I can avoid it, and drink mainly squash and water. Hmmm, I think portion sizes are going to have to be cut next.
