How are GCSE grades calculated? Help?

Sorry if this sounds confusing but..

example (these are made up)
x unit 1 - 35 (just into an a)
x unit 2 - 40 (just into a b)
x unit 3 - 20 (b but one mark off an a)

Assuming I get a remark for unit 3 (in my case it's english literature controlled assessment AQA) and it goes to a B - would they finalize the mark by saying "ABA" = overall an A or would they completely disregard that you just got into a certain grade and add the scores up so for example 35+40+21=96=overall an A or B grade?

Basically, when they get the FINAL mark of that subject, is it worked out by the specific marks in each unit or judge by the grade of that unit, without taking into account how many marks in etc etc. ?

Thanks.

Oh.. wait, can you even get a controlled assesment remarked? (if yes then ignore this sentence.)
