Contact Lenses - May parents wont let me....

I have had glasses for a year now for reading the board at school and wathcing TV, but I just don't like them and I think it is like making a ring round the bottoms of my eyes.

I mentioned contact lenses to my parents and they said NO! Don't meantion it etc. I think this is because they are old fashioned and so maybe 20 years back they weren't the best solution due to the problems they caused.

Now can you guys tell me what the problems are, because I really want contacts....

Problems mostly happen with non-dailies because some people don't clean them properly

Dailies are a much safer and hygienic option though might be slightly more expensive

Obviously your eyes need rest so don't wear them 24/7 - take them out for sleeping, don't close your eyes with them whilst sunbathing

Why don't you ask your parents to go and have a consultation

Also, depends how old you are - less than 13 should probably wait a bit

What are the reasons that your parents give? Have you tried explaining the discomfort you find with glasses? Would you be paying for them?

Suggest taking them to an opticians to discuss it.

As long as you are hygenic (i.e. wash your hands before handling, and follow instructions properly for storing in solution if you have monthly ones) then they should have no problems.

I have been wearing glasses since I was about 10 and decided to try contact lens out. I did a 30 day trial a few months back and found the disposable ones unsuitable for my eyes because they are dry, but the monthly ones were fine.

My parents don't mind because my dad wears them, and they said as long as I pay for them they have no problem (but I need to find a job!).

if you only need glasses for the board/tv you'd probably imo be better not wearing them at all. Just sit a little closer to the front in class and move the chair closer to the tv. Glasses make your eyes reliant on them and over time your eyesight will actually deteriorate through wearing them.

Is that definitely true? (i'm looking for some evidence here, not just a YES)

Reply 5

yes.

i'm pretty short sighted, but the glasses the optician told me to wear, whilst they did make me see perfectly the board/tv, they also made vision without wearing them even worse. i haven't worn them in years now and although i still can't see really far my sight is actually got back to what it was before seeing the optician.

There's no point in glasses if you're only a little shortsighted because they just make it worse. it's only if you really can't see that i'd bother with them.

Cheers guys.

Well I'm 16, 17 in June. I only got glasses at 16, would have got them earlier but didn't bother and I found my eye sight to worsen, propably me straining my eyes which is different to what Thud says, my brain/eyes must be playing games with me.

I don't think I want to move closer to the TV or board

My parents said somehting like your eyes will dry out :s-smilie:

I am 99% sure it is not about the money, they will be paying and I am pretty sure they won't mind. They are just worried about my wellbeing.

You can get opothalmic eye drops and solution if your eyes are proved to be dry. And if you only use your lenses for when you're at school and when you're at home a bit and go out, you can always take them out or change them if your eyes get too dry or irritation or what have you- I mean you shouldn't wear them that long in one go anyhow whatever the condition of your eyes! You can always take them off and put your galsses back on when you're doing your work or not doing those things!

If you're 16 just have a consultation, get them/ pay for them yourself! That's what I did as soon as I could

Yeah I will be taking them off when I get home I would say, and would wear them when I go out as well.

I know you can't wear them in one go, and will take them off when I sleep.

I'll have another try with my parents.... but my dad just got quite angry when I mentioned them. Mm.. he must know someone personally or a father of someone who had them and something happened to them....

And finally do people who wear glasses get like little dips (not the right word to explain it, I can't really) under their eyes when they started to wear glasses? Like my skin has gone softer under my eyes and don't really want that .

I wouldn't want to anger my parents like that really

Oh ok, it probably wasn't the best suggestion - why don't you ask your parents to go with you to the optician so they will have the chance to ask any questions. Just make it clear that you don't expect anything, and if they're not happy you'll drop the subject.

There aren't that many bad things that could have happened, contact lenses are perfectly safe if you look after them:eek:

My strength of glasses is fine. They are somehting like + or - 0.5-2.5, I can't remember exactly which value and postive/negativeness... I am short sighted btw, so those won't require any thinning I think.

I'm short-sighted and have glasses for years, so I can see the TV and board etc. Moved onto contact lenses in the summer, and (other than an allergy to the cleaning solution), have had no problems.
I still wear my glasses quite a lot, because there are days when I just can't be bothered to put my lenses in, or if I've already worn my lenses for 12hrs.

Maybe you could persuade your parents to let you try a 30-day trial, because I can't see how that could cause much (if any) harm. It's usually free, and they keep a close eye on you all the way through, so it's quite safe.

Some people look better with glasses than contact lenses. Glasses are suppose to make you look more mature with a dab of elegance... or it can make you look like a geek.

I wear glasses sometimes just to look mature, without the lenses in them of course.

Wow, how mature of you...

I just hate glasses because for a few reasons.

You have to clean them, and you always have smears on them no matter what.
You have to carry a glasses case with you wherever you go.
My TV is in front of bay windows, so when I watch it there is tons of glare which annoys me.

Life's tough!
