Were you ok as a fresher without facebook?

You don't have to have one but it is useful to meet coursemates and stuff, it might be worth just setting one up just so its easier, you dont have to use it much if you dont want too

Even if you don't use it at all, there's no reason why you shouldn't sign up. You can just set it up and just log on for friend requests!
Actually if you didn't have one and were reasonably cool IRL you'd become quite mysterious and it would increase your rep.
I have Facebook but I only use it to contact friends and check course page info, I don't upload photos or make statuses much anymore.

I didn't have a Facebook account when I started uni, and it was fine. However, I wasn't really heavily involved in socialising. It seems like a lot of events are organised through it, but you'd probably be able to find out about them another way.

I actually ended up signing up after a couple of weeks, not because it was necessary, but because it was a convenient way to contact people if I didn't have their number or anything.

I'd say it's totally up to you. You'd have no problems without one, but I'd recommend it to make things easier. It's not like there's anything to lose.

I don't use it, never will in the forseeable future for my personal life.

However, i may in the future make one , and i would have had one at university, purely for the events - sports, extra-curricular, coordinating group work with friends, sharing revision material and tips and advice.

Otherwise, i conduct all my social media privately, to a select group of a few people, and my life is kept private.

The idea of taking 'selfies' and posting them to me is very superficial, it just feels conceited, self-engrossed, self-obsessive, and it doesn't bode well.

I'm not saying those who do it have or practise these traits, or i am 'holier than thou', it could be i just don't connect with it and others may see things differently, no-one is 'wrong' perhaps, it's just up to people to have the freedom to choose.

Yes I was fine throughout university without it.

But if you are worried about it you could just quickly set one up.
