A2 English Language Investigation Coursework

Regarding your investigation title, do you mean people who don't speak English as their first language pick up English slower than others? Because if that's the case then obviously, yes.

Your current title 'do people who don't have English as their first language pick up language slower' doesn't really make sense because whether people are English or not they pick up their own language still...(well, typically)

Hi I'm really having problems deciding what to do. I was going to look at the similarities and differences of politician's speeches before sending the country to war but I'm not sure whether that meets the specification "collect original data". Does this mean that we either need to record or transcribe spoken English?

Why not just analyse what you've got? It's probably a good idea to double-check that your aims are linguistically clear before you do that, so just make sure you have specified exactly what you mean by politeness strategies and FTAs. Your frameworks/methods are likely to involve lexical choices (i.e. which words Kyle uses), semantics (the meanings of those words), pragmatics (the implied meanings behind them) and some grammar (structures of utterances and the classification of words, phrases & clauses etc.), and interaction is involved, but needs to be more clearly defined. IME it's better not to speculate too much about audience effects unless they're really clear from the context (e.g. making the audience boo or cheer through the use of an FTA to the guest) and to focus primarily on how Kyle uses language himself.

Have you considered the identity of his guests and how they respond, or is it just Kyle you're focusing on?

Depends if you're AQA A or AQA B. A spec (ENGA4) requires spoken language & B spec (ENGB4) any kind of data. You don't have to record it for B spec either - you could find copies of speeches, but you'd need to analyse them yourself and perhaps check their accuracy against spoken versions.

I've got the investigation bit down, I think (I'm studying how different teachers of different subjects use power effectively in a year 13 classroom and how the students react to this). I'm having really big issues with the media text that goes with. How am I supposed to link this to something in the real world? Any ideas?

Could someone give me advice on whether my current idea would work?

I was thinking about analysing the language in my own stories (I haven't chosen a specific focus yet), and how I've developed my language in terms of narrative, genre, lexis, grammar etc. as I've grown up. I've found quite a lot of stories I've written from when I was about 5 years old, through to now (I'm 17 currently). Would this work as a focus? And if so, how many stories would you suggest I use as data? If I went with this idea, I would then produce a guide of how to improve story writing.

My fallback is analysing the language used in history books aimed at children (e.g. Horrible Histories) compared to A-Level or degree-level History books. I feel like this idea is much safer, not sure what I'd do for the inform text though.
Hello, I'm starting my coursework on language acquisition and literally have no understanding of what to do, as my original teacher is off due to stress. I would like to investigate the language differentiation used on children's and adult graves, and would just like some advice on where to go with this one?

Hi,

We were told that we had to include:

- Introduction-
-say why you were interested in this topic area
- how you gathered your data
- Any limitations of your study (e.g. only two children- not representative, transcripts not reliable, etc)
- Any background research. Look at studies about children's speech. David Crystal's book may be useful, else you could google it and see what you come up with. Ideally make this specific to WHAT you are investigating. You should try to refer to these studies through your investigation as you analyse your data.
- How do you intend you analyse your data? We split our work into four sub-questions. E.G. One on gramma, lexis, etc. An example may be: how does the lexis of these two children differ?-if you were looking into the differences? My study was on the gender differences in two children's language, which was very interesting. I really enjoyed it- I hope you can too. :-)

-Do each sub question seperately. Analyse it how you like. Use graphs, tables, even mind maps. Try to answer the question really. Make comparisons, explore similarities... perhaps suggests reasons for these (using your research if you can). This is the main body of your study.

- Conclusion.
-What did you find out?
-Were there any problems/ difficultues and how did you overcome these?
- What are limitations? What would you do differently? How could you expand your research?

I hope this helps. It may not be all you need to include but I hope it's a start. Feel free to PM me if you get stuck. good luck! xxx

Hey I'm trying to do my coursework but AO2 (I think?) is confusing me. With my investigation I'm not referring to any theorists so I was told to do general research and refer to that for AO2, but I'm unsure how this will work. Has anyone been in this situation? I don't know what to do

I'm looking for some sources on my English coursework, i want to base it around the language in games with a focus a singular game character. Only problem i can't find any information online about this area. Any help?

This sounds like my investigation I am trying to complete. Could you give me a few websites or places you found the language
Are you referring to computer games? If so, can you not collect and transcribe your own data? At a basic level set your phone to record as you play. This will give you the chance to show skill in your selection of which parts of the recording to transcribe.

Why not narrow down the E2L one to focus on speakers of a specific language. I've seen some excellent projects like that. One of my students did a project on Cristiano Ronaldo (spit) and his changing English across three years of interviews. Another did one on her parents' and aunts' use of Jamaican patois.

If you narrow it down to a couple of frameworks and can get access to decent data they're good projects. Change is a massive topic, so pin it down to something very precise.

Hello i was planning on doing something similar to the cristiano idea I was wondering what you would analsye in this area
