Cambridge 2016 Postgraduate Entry

Scroll to see replies

Hey,

I checked the website today and I have received an offer for the MPhil in Children's Literature. However, I don't feel ready to celebrate now as I am yet to receive the confirmation email that makes the offer official. Also, on my application I am now "seeking a college." Does anyone know how long it might take for me to receive email confirmation and be placed in a college? (I picked Clare Hall and Darwin College as my choices, but I did not get my application in until April so they may already be oversubscribed)

Thanks, and good luck!

I received my offer through the website today. Does anyone know how long it takes to get the official e-mail you're supposed to wait for? I didn't specify a preference College-wise, it doesn't take awfully long for one to select me, right?

(Archaeology MPhil here. Anyone else?)

Congratulations! I will be doing the Archaeology MPhil as well. The official email came in a few days, definitely less than a week!

I should add actually that the official email doesn't specify a college place, I am still 'seeking college membership' as well on an open application. I received an offer around a week ago

Hi! I'm also doing the archaeology mphil. I believe I got my email very quickly; I had stopped checking the website every day, which makes it hard to say the exact timeline. I do remember I was "under consideration by department" and got an email about a week later, without checking the website in between. You don't need a college offer in order to receive the department's email, so you hopefully will get it any day now! Congratulations.

Oh hi! Great to hear. What specialisation are you planning to take? I'll probably go for the Heritage and Museums one.

Congratulations to you too. Well I'm not in a hurry, now I've got to sort out funding. Can't wait!

I'm looking at doing European Prehistory as the most likely
Hey guys! Ive applied to the MPhil in social/develop psychology on January 6 and yesterday I received an email from the psychology department secretary who said she'd updated my CamSiS record to "under degree committee"! Now one of the documents says theyre meeting on the 14th, do you think I'll hear something soon then? How long did it take you guys to get from the degree committee to BoS?! It's taking suuuuch a long time...

For me (MPhil Epidemiology) the longest process by far was the department decision. That took the best part of a month. As soon as they made their decision the degree committee and graduate admissions board both took less than a full working day to make their decisions and email me with an official offer.

Still waiting to hear what college I have been allocated to. My CamSIS page says that I was unsuccessful for Clare college though :/
Applied to MPhil in Planning, Growth and Regeneration. Got my status changed to 'Awaiting Decision from BoGS' on friday, but no other changes until now?

Please let me know what you find out! I will try to ring them, but I'm for the US so there's a small window of time I'll even be able to reach them.

Heya, I was wondering if you heard anything useful from Trust?I am considering calling them as well. They need to know when they will be announcing the European Scholarships and the Santader Awards (I am eligible for these two).

I just called trust and they said my application is still under consideration. When I asked specifically about the scholarship I'm eligible to, she said it is undecided yet and once a decision is made I'll be notified via email. So in short, nothing more than the info I already have at the moment!!!! This is really frustrating :s-smilie:

Thanks for responding -- I had a feeling that would be the response, unfortunately.

Btw, you wouldn't happen to be the poster that posted about needing to know because you were considering accepting another offer and needed to know by a certain time, would you?
Anyone else either at Wolfson college or a Film and Screen Studies graduate?
Finishing up a p/t master's-- nominally at Wolfson. Contact has been limited, however, for the obvious reasons.

Hey, thanks for your reply! You were absolutely right, it seems that the longest part of the wait is (finally) over: I just checked and already moved to BoGS!??! I was totally perplexed haha! I'll keep my fingers crossed...

Too bad u didn't get into Clare, did you hear that soon? Do you have an alternative or was that already your 2nd option? Personally Ive got no clue, but in general, is it more difficult to get into a college when you're admitted later than march/april you think? (I applied to st Johns and Newnham...)

Could you say anything about what Wolfson is like as a college? I pretty much know nothing, so in terms of building/library/distance from town/people etc
It's sort of near the Sidgwick site-- history, law, English, etc.-- and less than a mile into town. Not bad if you're walking in decent weather. If you have to go for groceries or to the train station, it's more of a pain.

Not totally sure about the people. I've stayed a few weeks on my own, and the housing is quite acceptable. The planning doesn't really do it for me, at least, when it comes to hanging out or meeting anyone. Of course, with all the grad students running around, perhaps a little loneliness is part of the package.

There are a few other colleges not too far away, but actual outside food and drink are a bit more of a hike. The Red Bull is close, and maybe a half mile away are some Indian places, and another pub or two.

Formal halls are very nice-- a good blend of tradition and egalitarian virtue. Tolerable food and wine, although I wouldn't make a special trip. It's not insanely subsidized as at other colleges. What little I saw of cafeteria-type breakfast and lunch in the same hall was very British, at its old-style worst.

Some swear by the more "mature" entertainments-- salsa dancing classes, stand-up comedy, and the like. Again, I never really ran into that so I can't comment.

I know exactly how you feel not wanting to jump the gun, but unless you have lied about something very important on your application I would assume it's safe to say you will be offered a place! Congratulations!

Clare was my first option, and I heard back from them just over a week after receiving my official offer of a place. I heard back today (just shy of 2 weeks after offer,) that I was also unsuccessful at Trinity, my second choice :/. I think you may be right, because Trinity specifically said they generally stop admissions for graduate students in April/May, and it's obviously a first come first served basis for graduate entry into colleges. Then again it's equally likely that those two colleges didn't like me as an applicant, I don't want to make excuses.

To be completely honest I'm not too concerned about college, The reason I picked those as my preferences was that I would like to be central in Cambridge, and the buildings/gardens look great. As far as I know, the computer programme will essentially send my application to 3 different colleges now, probably based who has the most space. Fingers crossed I'm not allocated to a college that I dislike :/.

Best of luck getting into your colleges.
Anyone else here doing MPhil epidemiology that already knows what college they will be attending?

Ugh. I am pretty much done at my home institution but it takes them ages to to certify my transcripts.. I hope I can make it in time until July 31. Funding secured, got a place at Wolfson College, can hardly wait. But having to ask for my transcripts every second day at home (Free University Berlin) is excruciating.

Hey!
I've got an offer for MPhil Public Health, which has roughly 70% overlap with Epidemiology. Same department, slightly greater focus on the qualitative side. I've got a place at Magdalene, which is also where I finished my BA in 2015.

In general, people tend to be happy with their college regardless of where they end up. I got Magdalene for my BA through being pooled, which means I wasn't accepted at my first choice of college, and I was thoroughly happy with it despite initially applying to Clare. The only choice I'd worry about is Girton, which is a while away (and about doubles your distance to Addenbrookes, where the Epidemiology/Public Health work takes place), but the chances of you being that unlucky are slim!
