Low Blood Pressure

When does low blood pressure become dangerous? I recently had an operation and my blood pressure dropped to 82/46 that night and the nurse wouldnt allow me up. Now I quite frequently when I stand up feel dizzy and my vision goes black with bright lights. Does it take a while for blood pressure to go back up or should i go to the gp. I know that my bp is usually low. I have been in hospital a lot recently and been having stong painkillers like morphine and codeine and morphine makes me very very sleepy and also the last time i had it i couldnt breathe. Im not sure whether morphine and low blood pressure are related or just coincidence! Anyway ive miseed several weeks off uni so dont want to go to the doctor and miss more lectures if it will pass. Sorry for the waffle but what do you think?

Morphine depresses your respiratory rate, which may lead to a decrease in blood pressure so yes the morphine probably hasn't helped but if you had low BP anyway it's unlikely to be the sole cause. A healthy blood pressure should not be below 90/50 so yours was pretty bad! Low BP does have significant implications for your long term health so it is worth going to see your GP even if you miss some work.

Yes, go to your doctor... It is not normal for your vision to black out when you stand up... It's a sign of low blood pressure...

Lol, can I ask why you have all these dots trailing off at the end of your sentences...? Is it to make you appear mysterious....? And we already know the OP has low blood pressure, she told us that....

I know... but the OP didn't appear to make the connection that getting up and being dizzy is a sign of low blood pressure... clear sign that they should definitely go to the GP...

btw, we don't know that it is a "she"!... you don't have to be a girl to post on H&R you know :p:...

as for the dots... lol, i wish i was mysterious.... that would be kind of cool... but it's just my own unique style... I used to write all my posts in bold just to be different but I've stopped that now...

I think I'm going to adopt the dots myself....I think the OP is a girl, dunno why, I just do....but also I'm more inclined to use the female pronoun to combat prejudice....also, my mistake about standing up...I just assumed the OP knew that feeling faint and dizzy was a sign of low blood pressure....

I spend most of my vertical moments in that state of "woah...headrush..." kind of thing when standing up and my vision goes blurry and everything sounds echoey and I feel slightly numb and the room spins a little. It often follows that I end up horizontal soon afterwards hehe. Not terribly fun.

That sounds just like me but as yet ive never ended up horizontal just sort of sway and bang into things! Whats your blood pressure do you know? I have a love of mountains but feeling dizzy when you stand up is possibly not the best thing to have on top of a mountain with a sheer drop either side. I suppose I should try and sort it though what can a doctor do? Im a girl by the way!

You're talking to someone who is sitting on a uni computer on TSR while her friends type up notes around her...anyway sorry about spamming your thread OP but it was worth it (for me).

I'm not at uni but I had 2 exams this morning... They weren't brilliant but they weren't as bad as I expected... There was one question that was funny though... It literally said "Outline one cause of depression (20 marks)"... I was a bit clueless about what i was supposed to right but at least I could waffle an answer... something you can't do with sciencey questions...

I had that very question in my A2 psychology exam, outline one cause of unipolar depression, 10 marks. I wrote and wrote for ages about the biological explanations, because that's pretty much all I'm good for hehe. I'm sure your's was quite a bit harder hehe

To the OP: My BP varies a lot. The highest it ever is, is about 120/80, I'm currently averaging about 100/70ish, and when I'm really really dizzy and stuff it's often around 90/60ish.

As to what the doctor can do about it, not that much tbh. They'll tell you to keep very well hydrated, avoid standing/rising suddenly, take extra care, warn you to sit/lie down if you start to feel faint, and that's about it. Other things you can try include increasing your salt intake or have caffeinated stuff. Bare in mind that both of those tactics have other health implications, so go see your GP before trying them.
