Did this guy (see link) ^ use tor to buy guns and explosives to attempt to blow up his college?

Well, I've seen quite a lot of new threads about this recently (well, more than the usual) so I thought about making one of my own.

What do people think of Tor? Do you even know what it is?
Are you for it or against it? Would you have it criminalised, like the browser, or any substitute criminalised?

Or are any of you willing to share your experience on the deep web? :colone::colone:

I used it to use it to prevent website from inferring my geographical location based on my IP. As you might know, some streaming services are restricted to netizens of a particular geographical area. Tor allowed me to bypass that.
I don't use it these days.

No, it's just an anonymous browser.

It is not a browser. Do not misinform, please.

I'm glad someone asked!

There's going to be a bit of theory first though.

What you can find via normal browsers is the stuff only indexed by Google.
Google is able to only index a small part of the web, making only a small part available to you. (And I mean really, really small.) Like it's only able to read that, so index it.
Tor is a browser which is able to read the rest of it, including what you can find via normal means already.

Tor also works by encrypting the information sent, then it randomly bounces it off many nodes (just imagine points), before it reaches the other end, so all information sent and received is firstly unreadable, and largely anonymous. So the Government would find it very hard to e.g. block content on there, or track people.

It can be used by whistleblowers, journalists, safe communications in dictatorial countries, but also by criminals like child molesters, child pornography, drug trade (e.g. the infamous-in-places silk road), hitmen, traffickers. (I think the major and obvious ones are child pornography and drug trade.)

Sorry for the non-concision, that's a mish-mash of an okay explanation.
Feel free to correct me, or explain it better, if I'm wrong anyone.

Tor isn't illegal, just the stuff you can e.g. find on it is illegal.

That's factually incorrect. Tor is not a browser and Tor does not index websites like search engines do. -_-

Well I did say feel free to correct me (implying my limited understanding.) I didn't say I was correct in my defence!

Would you mind elaborating upon the matter?

edit: I've never really done any proper research on the matter, as opposed to things I've just come across/anecdotes on the matter.

This is so lame, im on Tor now but u need bitcoins to access everything! (I still dont understand what bitcoins actually are)

Also, there are sites that sell paypal accounts and fake money!! Damn I might even make some use of this :colondollar: I need to look into this more carefully..

Just installed but when I try to connect it just says 'connecting to Tor network' but never actually connects :/

Providing you have internet connection, and you're using an android device (I've never used computer version, so I don't know about that), after downloading orbot and orweb from Google Play, open orbot and there should be a big power button, then hold that down. Then after the arms on the side have went up, and the power button is green, click check browser, which would then lead you onto orweb.

I don't remember much of a set up, apart from setting language and general advice.

I don't really know what to say. If you're using a computer, it's very different, I think.

The apps may be on other non-android devices, but I use android, so that's what I'm sticking with.

I s'ppose keep trying.

Oops, ignore last reply, I see you got it.

I still don't know what bitcoins are either, as I haven't been bothered to search up. (I get what they're used for, but not how they work exactly.)

Uhm, just saying, there's quite a lot on there if you know where to look. You'll eventually find how to navigate well (better.)
edit: Mind there's far far more I guess, just you can't get to it without getting involved. (I presume anyway.)

I had no idea m8. Fanx for the explanation. So if you can access illegal stuff with it, how comes tor itself isn't illegal to have?

Also, I @'d you and you never came to help :-(

It's legal for the same reason you can access illegal things via a standard browser (e.g. pirated movies, torrents etc), the product itself does nothing wrong, it's the way in which you use it that can be illegal.

It uses a .onion domain, rather than your common .com .co.uk. Insanely secure, so secure the government or NSA are unable to keep surveillance and monitor. Normal browsers cant access it so you need a Tor browser to use it. Due to the lack of intervention anything goes down there, child porn, identity fraud, assassinations you name it. Its been dubbed the deep web, comprises of 96% of the internet. Id advise you not to try to access unless you have a VPN or proxy. Even so, the **** on there destroys souls.

Bitcoins is simply put digital 'internet' currency, use the hidden wiki
http://zqktlwi4fecvo6ri.onion/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

Id be careful though, i assume you're not using a VPN or proxy, your ISP can still log your downloads.
Let me just say that if anyone is considering visiting the deep, dark web... DON'T.

You will see some horrifyingly scarring things. I actually found a page dedicated to videos of women crushing kittens alive in heels... You read that sentence right. Most messed up fetish I've ever come across...
