Had a bad cold/flu a couple of weeks back but I am now feeling very tired and lazy

I had a really bad cold a few weeks ago which resulted in my spending two days in bed. Since then I have had a really nasty cough, my nose keeps running and I keep sneezing.

The worst thing is I am feeling very lazy, I can't seem to be bothered doing anything and everything is a big effort. I am getting behind with work now and some clients will be quite cross with me at this rate.

Does anybody know what is wrong and what a simple short term cure is?

You might have picked up something else, or it might be the end of what you had before, at the moment I have something similar, I had flu and spent 3 days in bed a week and a half ago and then i got a cold and it's just got worse

Have you been eating properly? Cause if you haven't that would be a good start, also make sure you drink enough water and wrap up warm if you have to go outside
meh know the feeling, i guess you just have to get on with it.

May sound silly, but did you have any specific symptoms which may indicate that it was Glandular Fever instead?

Such was what? Each day I have different symptoms, earlier this morning I was coughing none stop, now I keep sneezing and I am blocked up. I also feel quite drowsy.

BBC Website

* high fever - above 39Β°C (102.2Β°F)
* sore throat (this can be severe and mistaken for tonsillitis)
* tiredness and lack of energy
* loss of appetite
* weight loss
* swollen tender glands (in the neck and around the body)
* headache
* muscle pains
* occasionally a fine red rash
* sometimes an enlarged, tender spleen

It's possible to have Glandular Fever and only have some mild symptoms, or even none at all, even though commonly the symptoms are quite bad.
I was just curious about whether it's GF or not because you said that you feel very tired, which is a long-term effect of the illness.

The best thing is to just go see your Doctor. If they suspect that it could be GF then they might take a blood test to find out.

I had the same problem, I brought some medicine two days before I saw my GP. I manage to damage my lip really badly with the medicine I brought. I was mearnt to suck on the tablets like a sweet. I was biting it, and chewing it, it was sharp and now my lips hurt really bad. When I stick my tougue out, it feels like a glasses pressed against my lip.

My fault, shouldn't of got medicine over the counter.

Have a Radox herbal bath and you'll lose the muscle aches, cold, damaged skin, headache, tiredness, and it smells nice.
Recurrant sore throat is a common sign of gladular fever. Though sore glands of any type are a good pointer.

The doctor will give you a blood test if they are concerned.

I sometimes get like that after a really bad cold and taking a multivitamin tonic for a couple of weeks can help, I think it just makes up for anything you've lost when you've not been well which can make you lethargic and tired, I suppose it depends how bad you are though.

I was thinking that...GF can cause you to feel extremely tired and lethargic, and if that is indeed what you had a couple of weeks back, it might well be that you've got a bout of post-viral fatigue going on at the moment. I had GF, which developed into PVF, and because I didn't rest and get enough sleep, it then developed into chronic fatigue syndrome which I had for a good three months or so. I had to carry on going to school etc as I was in the middle of my A2 year trying to get into vet school but it was really awful. I never thought about anything except when I could get to sleep next! I used to sleep at lunchtimes, between lessons, for a couple of hours after school, then like ten hours at night. I also used to worry I would fall asleep at the wheel while driving. My advice is to see your GP as if it is post-viral fatigue you'll need some time off work to nip it in the bud with lots of rest and recuperation. Hope you feel better soon x

:s-smilie: Sorry about that...maybe just try and get as much sleep as possible then? Also when I was feeling ****ty I took a weightloss pill from Boots that had kelp in it. It contains iodine which is a component of the thyroxine molecule produced by your thyroid gland to give you energy. They won't make you drop loads of weight but it should give your metabolism at least a bit of a boost. You could also try something with green tea in it like Metasys? Just don't take them before you go to bed, otherwise it kind of defeats the object!
More sleep, vitamin B + C and for a short term fix (I know too much isn't good but) I use Red Bull.

Hope that helps, I have the flu too it sucks doesn't it!!

Get well soon :hugs:

Come on guys think. When you're ill there are physiological factors (related to the lymphatic response and elevated WBC/Neutrophil counts) which induce tiredness, this is to enable the body to concentrate on fighting the infection, and to devote all the available energy to your immune response. If you still have a runny nose and other low level symptoms its likely that there is residual infection thats stopping these mechanisums switching off.

Don't worry once thats gone you should get better, its usually totally self-limiting.
