    Hello there,

I was accepted at Durham and got allocated to Van Mildert. Thing is that college accomodation costs 6800 per year, which is a lot :/ In comparisson I found a lovely place near to the university which costs only 55 a week. Is there someone who has stayed in a private accomodation during the first year at Durham and can help me out? Is it a good idea. Also, if you have stayed in a private accomodation elsewhere in your first year, can you share your experience?

    Thanks in advance!

It's difficult, you should probably first contact the college about your situation.

Does that 55/week include your gas/electricity/internet/food? I doubt it includes utilities or food.

I stayed in private accommodation my first year because (1) I already had a degree so wasn't new to university; and (2) they don't allow spouses to live in college halls with you.

It will be more difficult for you to make friends, but not impossible.
