Hi, i've just finished my AS levels and am looking into studying medicine however the number of applications to medical schools are limited to 4 places. For my 5th choice I was considering mathematics at Oxford but considering the contrast between these subjects, is there any point? Will I be able to write an alternate personal statement for mathematics?

Usually, you cannot write a separate Personal Statement for the 5th choice. Also, Oxford is so competitive anyway, it is highly unlikely they would give you a place for Maths when you so blatantly are mainly interested in Medicine - they will want those at the top of their game in their chosen subject, rather than someone applying as a back up. The common choices for the 5th are things like Biomedical Sciences etc. that offer a transfer to that university's Medicine programme. Also, probably not worth your time unless you're taking Further Maths/STEP.

The fifth choice is designed to be safer, but the Oxford application process is rigorous, so it's probably not the best idea to apply there but maths itself is fine! You are allowed to submit an alternative personal statement to most places
