Hi everyone,

Just wandering if anyone here has any experience of Law interviews at Harris Manchester...what kind of format it usually takes and what questions are being asked...

I came across a few (new?) Harris Manchester specific podcasts today that I wanted to post onto this thread- one of them is an interview with a Harris Manchester law tutor, which may help you eve_22, though I haven't listened to any of them yet.

here is the website:
http://rss.oucs.ox.ac.uk/oxitems/generatersstwo2.php?channel_name=manc/culver_sep_08-audio&destination=poau

hope this helps!

Anyone has an offer to study at HMC for 2009/2010? If so, please speak up!!! Would love to hear from you!
Hi eve_22 - This will be my first post on tsr.....!
I originally applied to St Hugh's but had a second interview at Harris Manchester and have now been offered a place there for ppe! yippee
I can't believe that I have been offered a place and I actually much preferred hm college to st hugh's when I went there.
Yippee!
Will this be your first degree? It will be for me, I took a gap year after sixth form in 2004 and it kept on growing until now!

Congratulations on the offer natural_han! I am feeling prettu much the same-all of it still didn't sink in  I am too very very pleased with my offer!

Yes, it will be my first degree-I have been waiting for a while to do this...I am 22, by the way-what about you? I left school at 16 and am now studying at Birkbeck, sort of an access to law course at Level 4 (equivalent to one year of undergraduate studies)...
Oooh yes, I am 22 as well.. will be 23 in April. I have been studying french with the open university (completely unrelated to ppe I know), so now I just need to wait for October to arrive. It was really a spur of the moment decision for me to apply, but I felt that if I didn't try at least once I would regret it, and didn't want to leave it much longer as I would be getting very old!!

I have been working as a receptionist in a hotel for two and a half years, so really looking forward to the change, beginning to get annoyed with people talking to me as though I can't add 2 and 2....!!!

Did you go to an open day at harris manchester? I didn't even get to look around in daylight when I had the interview as it was too late in the day! But from the (limited selection of) pictures it looks very nice and I think it should be good to be part of a small college. Do you know how many other people will be doing law with you? I would like to know how many other ppe-ists there will be!

If anyone else reading this is already at hm (although I am not sure this is a highly subscribed-to thread!), I would like to know things like what kind of food are you given, are the formal meals really formal (bit worried about this as at St Hugh's it seemed more casual)? Is the gym that it refers to on the website the iffley road sports centre? Would appreciate any other general information that might be interesting!

I did not go to the Open day, but academic admissions administrator arranged a visit for me in the begining of October. I looked around and fell in love with the college on that same day-its small, friendly, welcoming, but at the same time it has beautiful grounds and architecture.

As for the number of people studying there for Law, they accept approximately 5 undergraduates a year, but on the prospectus says there will approximately 14 people studying law in total...As for the PPE, it says there will be approximately 18 people studying in total, though I am not sure how many of them will be first year undergraduates.

I can totally relate to the feelings you are having about reception work-I work in a night club, where I assist the director but also help out on the weekends. Before that, I have done waitressing, reception work etc. and one thing I am sure of is that I had enough  I know that the three years in university are going to be tough, as I have no parents in this country and so no financial support either and will not be able to work during the time at university. However, my boyfriend will support me all the way and I also have some savings, plus will be trying to claim the grant along the tuition fees loan-hopefully it will be enough  How about you? Will you be supporting yourself while studying? Also will you live at the college? I would love to do that, but I guess it will not be possible, as I would have to leave during the holidays and, since I have no family in here, would really have nowhere to go  My head is full of questions and uncertainties over how am I going to do this, but one thing I know for sure-whatever it takes, I will be going to Oxford next year

As for the food, I have heard that it is the best in whole Oxford university and has even won awards! I ate there during the interviews and loved it-provided that it was not the term time as well, I am thinking it could only get better in October! As for the formal dinners and the gym, ask pitseleh-she studies at HMC and would be able to answer these questions...

Oh no.. what are you considering instead, living in a shared house? I know it is expensive to live in Oxford. I don't think you would have the same experience if you didn't live in the college.. :s-smilie: I am not sure what I will do, I have a boyfriend and we rent a house at the moment. He wants to come to Oxford with me but I am not sure it will be possible because of the cost and whether I would actually want to live out of the college... but equally I am not sure if he could afford to live in our current house on his own (it is an hour away from ox)... arghhh!

I tried not to thing about this kind of stuff, or even to discuss it with my boyfriend because I thought I wouldn't be offered a place anyway and certainly didn't want to jinx it!

I feel for you not having family in the country, it does change the situation for you. What will your boyfriend do? Do you live together at the moment?

Re a grant, I hope to be able to get something, but I am not entirely sure whether I will qualify for anything. I am technically an independent student (been working full time for three years+) and even though I moved out of my parents house after sixth form, I still use their address for all my correspondence, banks, etc because I seem to move frequently! Because of this, I don't know if their income will count, in which case I would get next to nothing - even though they will not be giving me any money! Confusing...

P.s. I have seen that this forum is pretty strict on what to post where etc, am I going off topic here????? :p:

To answer your question, I would probably rent a place, like a studio, if we move with my boyfriend-he would work and we would try and pay it off...I know Oxford is expensive, but I currently live in London and I think it cannot get worse then that  If not, I would probably have to move to college and try and pay it myself and he would keep the flat in London, where I would visit him-I dont like this at all :s-smilie: but I guess we will have to make some sacrifices either way...As for the grant, I am also confused. I cannot declare my parents income, but I am an independent student...I dont know how they would count my household income though and will have to find out in January, once the local council offices reopen again. It is all very confusing

I have also read about the Oxford opportunity bursary, but apparently you can only apply for that if you are receiving government support, so I guess if I wouldnt qualify for maintenance grant, then the same will apply to the above...The last resort would be maintenance loan, which I am sure I would be able to get...

Hi all. I just this week got my unconditional offer to read Theology at HMC as a Senior Status undergraduate. (I took my first undergraduate degree in 2006, a BFA in Theatre/Psychology from New York University. I'm an American.)

I'm, needless to say, VERY EXCITED! I've been working as an actor the past couple years, after an aborted attempt at grad school in clinical psychology. I spent one semester in a doctoral programme directly out of undergrad, and though I had a 3.8 GPA, I realized I really didn't enjoy the field. So, I'm hoping to eventually earn a DPhil in Theology and the Arts, and am starting at Oxford. Squee!

Congrats - I'm a current student at HMC, so look forward to meeting you next year.

Hi,

I will be studying law there next year (if I make the offer  ). Congratulations on getting accepted and hopefully see you there in October!
Heh.. I've only just noticed these posts!

The only other person I know of who got in for certain was Lisanne (pretty German girl who applied to study PPE) - not sure if you met her, but she was lovely. I know some other people have posted their results in the big 'offers and rejections' thread, but can't work out who's who from the usernames!

*waves*

I probably met you - I co-ordinated the interviews, though I have a feeling I left early on the day you were there (which was presumably the Wednesday if you came from St. Hugh's) because there was a party in the evening, heh. Look forward to meeting you (possibly for the second time) either way!

It's gorgeous by day - you will really like it, I'm sure. It's a very well-loved college!

Re: numbers, there will probably be around four or five of you studying PPE; that's the number of PPEists in the other years, anyhow. That said, it's not fixed, so there could be more or less of you.

Re: the food - it's actually really good; as Eve mentioned, it's supposedly the best of all the Oxford colleges, as we're apparently the only college that gives the same food to both the high table and the students, which sort of ups the quality of what we're given. Formal meals are Monday and Wednesday, but on Monday the 'formality' simply involves slinging on your gown over whatever you happen to be wearing at the time. Wednesday is a little more formal, but nothing really smart (except on Wine Soc evenings, where everyone gets a bit more dressed up). Oh, and there are guest nights a few times per term, where everyone gets dressed up again. But yeah... the formality really exists in terms of the dress code, not of the atmosphere. They're actually the best nights of the week, usually.

Re: the gym - no, we can use the Iffley sports centre, but we also have free membership to two other gyms - LA Fitness down by the Westgate shopping centre and Willows on Abingdon Road.

Any other questions, give me a shout - other than that, look forward to meeting you!

Oh that's great! I met Lisanne at brekfast one day  We spoke about the interviews and she just said she didn't think she'd get in-she was lovely and I am glad that she made it

In terms of HMC, one more question-I saw many threads on TSR about white tie/black tie events, balls, subject dinners etc. -do HM hold any of those? It looks like a lot of fun lol!

Oh, and does HM need a deposit prior to starting the first term?

Thanks
thank you for your answers pitseleh, yes I think we did meet already, I had my interview at 4.30pm on weds, it lasted a very long time and kept the principal waiting..! By chance I think I met Lisanne as well (sat next to her around a long table in the jcr whilst waiting for interview), which is great because she seemed very nice.

One more question, do any first years live out of college, if so, how many?
