Hey!

I am applying to Harris Manchester to study law with Senior Status this for 2010 entry.

I am going down to the open day on 18th September for prospective applicants, but was wondering if anyone would be able to give me any advice or guidance on the application process & interview. In particular, if there are any Law students at Harris Manchester that could give me an outline of the application experience.

A bit of background: I am about to enter the final year student my first degree in Modern Languages-French & Spanish (predicted a 1st)- spoke to the admissions tutor at Harris Manchester and was advised to apply with Senior Status.

I am sitting my LNAT in 3 weeks ! Nervous! Getting the prep in now.

Hope everyone is well!

Me too! I'm also applying for Senior Status Law 2010. I've just graduated from Cambridge with a 1st in English and am currently working in a rubbish job to save money. I'm most worried about funding - I know HM has a scholarship of 9000 a year, but by my calculations you need about £16,000 including fees - how do people pay for this? Lost Angel - how are you doing it? and do you have other options? I have a place on the GDL at BPP in London deferred for next year but I'd really rather go to university - are you applying anywhere else? Sorry for all the questions!

Wish you both best of luck with your applications and I hope to see you at HMC for your interviews in December  It's a great college and a wonderful place to study law, so well done on making the decision to apply

If you have any questions about the course or application process, I will be glad to answer them where I can.

Hey!

Nice to hear from someone in the same situation as me!

I would be applying with the hope of getting some sort of scholarship from HMC, otherwise I will just have to privately fund it from savings, family etc.

In terms of degree course, the Oxford Law Degree is the only one I am applying to. The alternative will be to do the law conversion, but I'm looking at training contracts for funding through the conversion and LPC. There are a couple of city firms that would allow me to use my languages so I am looking at applying to them once the applications open for 09/10.

Are you planning on going to the Open Day in September at HMC?

S
Unfortunately I can't make the Open Day because of work. I was thinking of phoning up the admissions office to ask a few questions and maybe arrange a visit some other time. Do you definitely want to be a solicitor then? I've done a couple of vac schemes in city firms and I'm not sure...I realised while I was there that I'm interested in the law from a more academic perspective than the kind of law used in the city which is why I'd rather go to university than do the conversion, but I'm not really sure what I ultimately want to do.
Does anyone know whether it is possible to apply to the Senior status law degree at both Oxford and Cambridge?

As you have a first degree already you can apply to both Oxford and Cambridge for a second degree.

Were you doing Commercial Law on the vac schemes? I'm quite interested in business and the commercial side of law so I think City firms will appeal to me a lot. I am very keen to get a winter vac scheme for 09. Which companies did you go to?

But if you're applying for a second undergraduate degree, you can't apply to both Oxford and Cambridge in the same year. You'll have to pick one.

I have an offer to read PPE in 2010! I was smitten with the place during my interviews and thought my bad interview had ended any chance of returning. Grades permitting, I can't wait to come and study there.

Congratulations  Hopefully see you in October 2010!

Hi everyone! I have had an offer from HM to read Archaeology and Anthropology in 2010 and have some questions for any of you who currently attend HM...

I'm a little worried actually because I'm only 20 (I will just have turned 21 by the time I get to Oxford) and I fear everyone will be older/more serious/more experienced than I will be. My route to Oxford was pretty convoluted: applied as a high school student from the US, got an offer from a college, was unable to take them up on it, went to Brown University in the US instead for a year, decided halfway through the year that I should reapply to Oxford, did, interviewed, and got the offer from HM.

I'm thrilled and really excited to finally get to Oxford... but will I be younger than everyone else there? What's the social scene like? Is it ALL internationals? Just curious because there isn't much info on HM on the web.

If anyone could help me out I would be really grateful.

Hi,

First of all, congratulations on your offer!I am a first year student at HMC, so will try to help with some of the questions you have.

Firstly, there are quite a few people aged 21, so you certainly won't be alone  I am almost 24 myself and majority of us fit in the 21-27 age bracket. Of course, there are a number of people who are older than that, but all of them are really great. Everyone socializes together and age is a largely irrelevant factor.

Secondly, do not be worried about the social side of things. HMC students are by no means old or boring  There are plenty of things organised by JCR, people often go out clubbing or have drinks at the local bars or pubs...There is also a Wine Society, a Film Society, JCR quest nights, just to name a few.
Check out Harris Manchester JCR Blog for more information http://harrismanchesterjcr.wordpress.com/

As for your fear of there being 'all internationals', it's really unfounded. There are many British students, in addition to Americans, Europeans and etc. Overall, a really healthy mix.

One thing that you will find though is that HMC is a small, cosy and really welcoming college. The student community is pretty tight and you end up knowing almost everyone (if not everyone). There are plenty of opportunities to socialize and you are welcome to choose in which events you are willing to take part, so there is no sense of pressure, whatever you choose to do.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any further questions.

I have an offer for PPE for 2010. Im only 23 now (24 when starting) and have an equally convoluted educational background.Congrats on your offer.

If I may now shamelessly plug the HMC Offer Holders 2010 facebook group (of which I am the only current member)...

Congratulations, all!

I'm a fresher at HMC reading Theology. (Technically I'm a second-year, since I'm Senior Status, and am the only second-year theologian at the College.) I'm 25, and got my first degree 3 years ago in Theatre and Psychology at NYU. I then entered a Psy.D. program in Clinical Psych, which I left half-way through my first year, and have been working as a professional actor and office admin for a grassroots theatre non-profit since then.

As Eve said, most of the students are in their 20s, including quite a few at the younger end of the spectrum. (I'm actually older than most of the students accepted last year.) While we have one of the higher percentages of international students, there are also many English students, so it is in fact a good mix, not dominated by either internationals or domestics. (And of the internationals we have are people from the U.S. to India and regions in between, mainly Europe.) The JCR is always a comfortable and friendly place to hang out (especially if you play pool - we have one of the only free JCR pool tables in Oxford), and people hit the pubs regularly. I live out, so I don't participate in as many of the social activities as others do (partly because I also have made many friends through the Catholic Chaplaincy, where I can probably be found if I'm not in College, and so I split my activities between College friends and Chaplaincy friends). But even though I live out I've still made many good friends in College, and feel just as welcome at bops and things as if I were living in. (I also attend Hall as often as I can - excellent food and conversation! - though the Formal Halls twice a week clock in at over an hour and can really eat into essay time if you're on a deadline.)

Our college has a reputation for being the friendliest college, and it really is true. The staff, faculty, and students are all quite welcoming, and I haven't noticed any cliqueishness myself. Even though I didn't apply to HMC, I'm happy I was pooled here. It's a really wonderful environment, and I look forward to welcoming you all next fall. (I also have a friend who's a barman at my local pub who applied to HMC to read English after I showed him around, and he just informed me he's been accepted! Please welcome my buddy Gareth next Michaelmas.:-))

Congrats again, and best wishes for the New Year!

Cole

Can someone tell me why HMC is consistently ranked at the bottom of the Norrington table?

http://www.mattmayer.com/fun/norrington/

This isn't the most updated version but you get the idea.

Sorry if this has been discussed before, but I am very curious! You would think given that the college is made up of mature students, the motivation level to succeed should be much higher....?
