I am at HMC but I don't study PPE. It is a very popular subject in college, though.

Would you happen to know what sort of grades/qualifications do applicants get in with?

Reply 122

I'm sorry, I really do not.

I imagine all of them will have great academics though: first degrees in other subjects or A's at A level or Distinctions on Access courses. Quite a few are from abroad, where they will have graduated secondary school with top grades also. It is pretty much the same as the rest of Oxford, in that respect.

The admission criteria are the same as across the whole of the University. True, HMC is more accustomed to admitting students with access courses and those who have completed first degrees but that is not to say there are no students who have completed their A levels, took a few years out from education and then returned to do law at HMC. You might need to be more specific - what qualifications do you have?

It's very difficult to give generic tips, to be honest. If you do get called to interview, I would suggest you read a book or two on the english legal system and get to know a bit about how the courts system works, as well as general principles on English law (common law system, how does it differ from civil law etc).

This is a very useful podcast by senior law admissions tutor at HMC - tells you everything you need to know. http://podcasts.ox.ac.uk/tutor-view-louise-gullifer-audio

I hope this helps and good luck!

You're welcome.

I am afraid we, students, aren't made privy to this sort of information

It wasn't directed at me but I'll take you up on that if I may.

I notice you came via a Birkbeck Legal Method Cert so you are the ideal person to ask. I have just received an invitation to interview at HMC and was wondering how the workload, both in quantity and complexity/difficulty, compares with the Cert at Birkbeck?

The Legal Method is supposed to be equal to first year degree level but it would be good to know how true that is from someone who has got the tee shirt. I expect it to be considerably more intense at HMC and would actually be surpirsed to find it only at the level of the Cert.

Hi,

It is definitely more intense. I got by at Birkbeck doing very little (and got a Distinction) whereas at Oxford the workload is around 8 hours a day, including lectures and tutorials. I am finding that in final year it is even more.

Pretty much what I was expecting. I found Birkbeck pretty much the same but with appalling admin. Worth doing for the required qualification, I don't have any A levels, and easing you back into education if it's a while since you were there. Also met some great people. I'm still in touch with several other pupils and one of the tutors. Certainly one of the best ways for a mature student to put a mediocre academic history behind them.

I suggest you don't prepare at all. Have a few vodkas just before the interview to calm yourself, arrive at least 5 minutes late so you don't look desperate and start off with a few good jokes to relax the tutors.

Really don't need the competition

Seriously. Make sure you know your PS, apparently they like to use it as a springboard to ease the conversation, make sure you have read any books you might have mentioned in it for example.

Think about obvious questions, why Law, why Oxford, why HMC in particular. The law interview question doesn't need specific legal knowledge but it's not going to hurt if you've read your way round a couple of judgements to get a feel.

Have a look at the Oxford website, they have some vids of tutors giving tips and a couple of interviews.

I just got shortlisted for E&M at HMC. Pooled from Brasenose.. I really don't know much about the college other than that it is for mature students (I'll be 21 this summer).. For those of you who go there: How is the college? How is it different from the other colleges? What difference does it make that it is for mature students only?

I am really excited about going there in December
