# Maths higher gcse - 8 to the 2/3?! watch

1. does anyone know how to work out 8 to the power to thirds?! i cant work it out n they always seem to have a question similar to tht? any hwlp greatly appreciated! thnx very much

Think of it as (8^(1/3))^2 = 2^2 = 4

4. Remember that anything to the power of 1/3 is just the cube root of that number.

Likewise, ^1/2 = the square root, ^1/4 = the 4th root (dunno what the proper name is sorry).

Lol- we had that question this morning when i did a past paper with my maths teacher and i got a different answer to you all! The way i was shown to work it out was:

cube root of 8= 2

2 squared= 4

So therefore the answer is 4 and to display your working out you just put the cube root symbol and the 8 in brackets with the square outside of it.
