I'm finding the social side of it and the whole hand to mouth thing very appealing

If you like the hand-to-mouth part, suck your thumb! Not very social admittedly but at least you won't die and kill others in the process

Or you could just take cancer injections?

Reply 4

Just think of what smoking could do your fertility, skin, breath... seriously, it's not worth it.

Reply 5

Used to. At one time I smoked two packs a day. Just quit cold one day. That was over a year ago now. It gets easier.

Reply 6

Of course there is pier pressure whether at collehe or uni obviously there is no getting away from that but you can make up your own mind whether or not to continue smoking that is up to you..

Reply 7

no its not appealing
and next time u see them stop thinking its appealing coz then u'll convince ur self that it is
in fact, next time think of how theyre harming themselves and those around them

its not worth it

trust me, theres nothign sexy about it, would you want to kiss someone who smelt and tasted of smoke? Ugh. If you're female, invest in lip gloss. if you're male. well i dont know what if you're male. But smoking, aint the way to do it.

Reply 9

I'm female. And just to clarify, I have never smoked before.

All I can say is roll on 1st July then people like myself who chose to preserve their health can go out and not come back smelling like a chimney!

Seriously it should cut down the "social" smokers, I mean if everyone was sticking pins in their eyes would you?

Suck a lolly.

i smoke. you're right about the social benefits and plus you get a nice buzz. the first cigarette of the day is always best.

however, i smoke because i've already accepted that i'm going to die younger than the average human due to my wreckless ways and mental instability. i don't smoke excessive amounts because when i do, my throat and breathing get messed up, i.e. i don't smoke to the extent that i put myself in high risk of lung cancer or any other smoking-related ailment.

as for addiction, you should really try smoking hand-rolling tobacco. the reasons being: a) it has hardly any chemicals and additives unlike tailored cigarettes which are full of them in hopes to get you addicted. b) they taste better: the tobacco is fresh and moist unlike normal cigarettes wherein it is dry; after smoking rollies i found that normal cigarettes give an itching sensation at the back of my throat most of the time. c) rolling is damn fun. you really feel like you've earned your cigarette. d) alternatively, you could find rolling tedious and not be bothered to do it, thus prompting you to smoke less. e) it's a much cheaper alternative than tailored cigs. f) it makes you look all cool and arty.

i say at least try it out. there are many people that attempt smoking and end up not liking it.

I'm in Scotland - we already have a ban on smoking inside. That's part of the social aspect, when a large group of friends goes out for a smoke I wanna join them!

I'm actually quite surprised that you're getting tempted at uni. I have never smoked, but most of my friends started at school and have since given up...

Don't give in to peer pressure, it's not worth it. I'm sure you can enjoy the company of smokers even if you don't smoke yourself, in just the same way as (in my opinion) you can enjoy a party without drinking excessively.

I can't believe somebody would actively encourage another human being to do something that will increase their chances of gaining cancer.
If you want to smoke, it's your body, but encouraging somebody else to do it is completely immoral.

To the OP - no, smoking is NOT a good thing to do, seriously, don't bother.

Reply 16

Flame away, but in my opinion there's no harm in smoking one or two, just to see what its like. You just have to not let it become too regular.

my, my, aren't we just packed full of contradictions?

as for your reasoning on morality, i'm fairly certain that you or most other people would not discourage me to tolerate or even promote alcohol consumption and would not claim this practise as immoral. however, drinking can also lead to a quicker death, sometimes moreso than smoking. drinking can cause plenty of accidents and ailments, e.g. liver cancer, alcohol poisoning, deaths via driving under the influence and alcoholism which is much more serious than a niccotine-addiction.

and like you said, it's the OP's choice whether to smoke or not. she's not obligated to listen to me, you nor anyone else.

Personally I don't mind smoking. My g/f smokes and occasionally I will sit in the rear of my MGB with her and share a ciggy with her.
I also enjoy a cigar at christmas and the odd pipe from time to time.

We live in an age where access to information has never been so easy.
You are an informed person. If its something you want to try then go for it.
Its kind of a personal thing. Some people find it revolting I actually find it a pleasent experience.

Its your life. You make your own decisions. It is wrong for people to tell you "no dont do that" or "yes do it". Make your own choice.

I disagree. Although in principle there's little physical harm in "smoking one or two", it then becomes very easy to get addicted. I have several friends who began by only smoking at parties every couple of days/weeks, but then progressed to smoke regularly. There are some people who are able to keep their smoking under control, but in my opinion it's not worth taking the risk.
