M3 - Is this spring solution correct?

Part a

I beleive that the solution has not included the elastic energy which the spring provides in the first 2 metres.

There is no eleastic energy if the string is slack that is if the total length is equal to or lesser than the natural length 2m. It is a string and not a spring
