I read an article about Norway's 'war children' and how German soldiers were permitted (indeed actively encouraged) to pursue relationships with Norwegian women as part of the Lebensborn programme, as the Norwegians were considered Aryan. To this day the children of those relationships are ostracised and discriminated against in Norway, which is why the family settled in Sweden I believe. The wider story is very interesting but also very sad - wikipedia page here gives an introduction.

I'll go back to lurking now

That does indeed sound very sad - I didn't know that was the reason why they had moved :frown: Thanks for the Wiki link, will have a look

And nooooo, don't lurk! Otherwise the thread will just be me posting to myself and that will make me look like an EVEN LONELIER lonely goatherd

26 year old ethnomusicology student (University of London) researching ABBA fandom, seeks TSR peeps to act as cheerleaders as she battles her way through PhD studies. Apply for cheerleading position(s) by following/posting on this thread

OMG This is sooooo interesting!

Do you need anything from me, as an ABBA fan?

I would certainly love to talk more at a later stage (am on holiday and it's midnight over here!) and maybe you would consider being one of my interviewees (via email or PM is fine!), who I can quote in my thesis? The idea is to let the fans' voices speak via me as a conduit, so I see this very much as an interactive process and would like as many people to be involved as possible

No pressure though, you're fine to just read and follow my progress and cheer me on, if that is preferable :h:

YES! Totally! I would love that! I could also get you more information from my family, they're the ones who introduced me to ABBA. Though it's more about ABBA in Iraq, not UK. Not sure how much help that could be.

Well I'm trying to get as many people from as many places (though admittedly a lot of my concentration is on the big ABBA countries, which are the UK and Australia), so that would be great to hear from your family if they are up for it! Thanks for your PM, will be in touch at some point once I've got my **** together :colone:

Still on holiday in Sri Lanka. Supervisor just emailed to change supervision time/date and was like "how's the reading going? Have you read anymore of X book?"

My reaction:

:afraid: :hide: :ahhhhh:   :getmecoat:

Luckily the final email in the exchange said "it's OK to have a break". Phew

It's a very beautiful place! We've been exploring new areas, since there were some areas that were just completely no-go areas for Sinhalese people, during the civil war (which lasted over 30 years IIRC, with tensions even before then). So we went up north to Jaffna, which was interesting. Culturally quite different to Sri Lanka. I didn't feel entirely at ease there but that's probably because I had only landed in Sri Lanka the day before :colondollar: On Saturday we're going to the hill country area in the middle of the country. Should be nice and hopefully a bit cooler - the weather here is very hot!

Food is EPIC. I never quite know how to describe Sri Lankan food to people. My older sister describes it as a cross between Indian and Thai but I'm not quite sure what she means by that, lol. Loads of different curries, pastries and fresh seafoods, as well as street foods and desserts that I think no other country has. Good times :awesome:

Went to the hill country area for a long weekend. Plan was to read loads but I only read a page :frown:

On the other hand, I *did* do an ABBA piano medley for my mum's friend. That counts as PhD research, right? :ninja:

Cool! I didn't know you played piano. Do you play any other instruments? Also what other artists (music) do you like?

Violin also, but I'm definitely more of a pianist! :musicus:

I love cheesy 90s pop (Steps, Spice Girls, S Club) and The Bee Gees. Those are my main favourites. More generally speaking, I will listen to anything mainstream-ish out of pop, hip hop and RnB. I don't really listen to today's music though - am very much stuck in the past

Oh I LOVE the violin. Violinists and pianists to me are the most talented of all musicians. Because let's be honest, everybody can play the guitar these days. I can only play, a little, the piano. I used to be able to play Moonlight Sonata, but I've forgotten most of it due to not touching the piano for years lol.

Do you not like Disco then? Because I've always classified ABBA as disco.
