Why won't red dye take to my hair?

I have just tried to dye my hair red, I used the L'oreal Creme Gloss dye but rather than go the nice shade of gingery red I thought I would get I seem to have gone to a brunette!

It can't be because of my natural colour as I am quite a fair blonde and have dyed my hair before in recent years (purple and dark brown both of which turned out wonderful), though I have been natural for about a year.

Any ideas of why it didn't work or how I can achieve a natural redhead look?

Maybe it took *too* well, because your hair is light. No idea how to fix it though...Hairdresser?

I don't mind the colour, I always thought I suited brown hair but, damnit! I wanna be red *sulks*

Red hair dye doesn't stay that well in anyones hair I don't think...something to do with the stuff used to make the hair dye that colour. It fades quicker too (and stains everything in the bathroom )

I dye my hair red which i love although i does fade alarmingly fast so make sure you use a good shampoo & conditioner (i like radiant red, john frieda). It might just be the colour you used wasnt meant for such light hair. Personally I prefer Garnier dye. I'd choose a colour which is slightly more red than you want because they always look more vibrant on the pack than they actually turn out to be.

Hope this helps!

I'm just using a semi permanent bright red dye on mine at the moment. It fades to pink and I just reapply the colour. Need my roots doing, though...

i know whats the problem!

your hair is probably porous (damaged) from eg straightners/hairdryers heat/previous bleaches/dyes/ towel drying/too much sum/not strong enough conditioning.

in this case your hair will soak up the dye like a sponge, penetrating more thoroughly, forming a darker colour and probably will take longer to fade out.

to fade it faster, try hot oil treatment (NOT the one for coloured hair), using clarifying or anti dandruff shampoo (tends to strip colour), detergent soap to wash clothes (not if your hair is damaged badly or else will get worse. rinse and condition thoroughly after).

i think the best idea is shampoo a few times with clarifying or anti dandruff shampoo, works well. after a few washes, the excess dye will have come out and you will be a good ginge. however beware that the red dye may last longer than 28 washes - even up to 3+ months if your hair was badly porous.

in the meantime, once you get to the gorge red shad definately use red colour enhancing shampoos. Te Tao red shampoo is the best and will make it a firey shiny bright red. look for colour depositing to help replace the effects of fade. good luck!

I have naturally blonde hair and dye it red. The best thing I can say is go to the hairdressers. To get my hair red it takes 6 different colours. The home-dye colours aren't great and if you want to go from blonde to red it may be quite difficult to get it to a shade you like/want. To get my hair to fade slower it took 15 months or so. I'd recommend Trevor Sorbie shampoos, they're excellent at making the colour last longer. Also a deep conditioning red hair mask will help.
Hope you get the colour you want, red heads have more fun :p:

I haven't had any problems dying my hair red with home dye? I have used both permanent and semi-permanent with good results. It's true that red fades very fast though, so it's a good idea to use a colour protecting shampoo and conditioner to prolong the colour. Mine fades to quite a nice reddish brown.

You're hairs probably been battered by all of the product you've used on it and the amount of times you have dyed it. Go to Tony & Guy and get a treatment, they will be able to tell you what will help the dye take.

Did you leave it on too long? those DIY hair dye are always a bit unpredicatable as they aren't tailored to your hair colour. If you want someting specific with better results you sould definitely go to a hairdressers xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

A hairdresser once told me its because the particles in red hair cye and bigger than in eg blonde or brown, so they find it harder to get into the hair (therefore why it doesn't always take as well) and thats also why it fades faster, (because a lot of the colour isn't all the way into the hair, if that makes sense due to them being too big) I always found that to be a useless piece of information! lol x
