Well, at Aberdeen you have excellent night life for starters. Our Union is brill and has loads of good promos.

The university will be spending over £200,000,000 in the next few years. We are getting a brand new library worth £55.5 million and a new sports centre worth £23 million (which will include an olympic size swimming pool, an extremely large sports hall, state of the art gym and loads more. We just had an £8 million social area called "the hub" open, which is ace.

At halls we have 3 computer rooms, wireless internet access, a bar, loadsa pool tables, an indian/kebab/pizza takeaway, a sports hall, a shop and a huge eating area.

As for teaching we are top in UK for chemistry, we are the fastest climbing university in the world (as far as league tables go) and have world leaders in some fields teaching us the stuff (eg. Dr Mon-Williams who discovered and named vertical gaze angle in perceptual psychology was teaching us about it this week).

Oh, did I mention the ace nights out, brilliant Student Assoc who are always giving us loadsa freebies and a huge, massive, giant selection of sports clubs and societies?
Aberdeen looks great, love the old campus. Seems to be a good all-round university!

Aberdeen is indeed very nice. Pity about the crap accommodation... There are however private flats which look very nice but I guess you won't make the best of being a fresher if you end up there.

wow, aberdeen seems like the place to be! one concern about aberdeen however is that a large volume of people from my current school seem to be going... silly question but is it likely to practically never see some people or do you see everyone and anyone on a night out?

positive feedback about st andrews would be most appreciated

That's a tricky one. If you all go to hillhead halls then you will probably see them a lot, but also a lot of other people. As for a night out, it just depends where you go as there are a lot of places to choose from.

You serious? The accommodation is brilliant. Stay away from Hector Boece and you will be fine. The three main houses at hillhead (Adam Smith, Wavell and Fyfe) are fine. Decent sized room, sink in room, decent meals, etc. The on site facilities are fantastic. You don't actually need to leave hillhead as everything is on site (oh yeah, apart from the odd lecture interfering with things, lol). Also North court and South house accommodation is as good as you will get anywhere!
eila - what are you going to study? cause that would be a major thing in the decision making process surely

Nessy seems to make Aberdeen sound like paradise, will be interesting to see on wednesday. Whats wrong with Hector Boece like?

St Andrews is supposed to be good if you like a quieter life but Aberdeen can give you the massive socail scene

I'm not one myself, but I've heard St Andrews students still manage a pretty good social life. There's more pubbing but less clubbing, if you want clubbing you can go to Dundee.
The cinema is lots cheaper than Odean, theres a nice beach and theres almost as many students as there is population. (ok, slight exaguaration but more students apply there than people live there)

Maybe it's a coincidence but I've only been to a flat in Hector Boece and it's a craphole. On the other hand, the whole "student village" looks good and the part of the city is nice. But you can't deny that most universities now offer broadband in rooms and en-suite facilities. I understand that most people don't care about it but it is a fact.

Yeah, Hector Boece is really bad, but that is reflected in the price. I get fast wireless internet access in my room :p: lol. It is the one thing that they are behind with big time though, I only get it cause I am lucky enough to be close enough to the hotspots.

Guys what are you on about! St Andrews is a way better uni! Okay the night life isnt amazing, im from brighton so im used to good clubs, but you make night life good wherever u are! I would only suggest going to Aberdeen uni for the night life. Academically St Andrews is far superior and if thats what your going for then you will be mad to choose Aberdeen especially if you can get into St Andrews

For my subject of interest (Medicine) it'd be a tough decision as both medical schools are excellent. Aberdeen has the distinction of being the oldest medical school in the English speaking world. In the general university league tables St Andrews does seem to rank higher than Aberdeen whereas for Medicine Aberdeen by far outranks St Andrews although the Medicine league tables are only ever taken with a pinch of salt.

I would say go and visit both universities if you haven't done so already and decide for yourself then.

It would seem to be that if you want nightlife go to Aberdeen. If you want a quieter pace of university life, go to St Andrews.

Yeah but St. Andrews send you off to Manchester!! I didn't even apply there because of that (I wanted to stay in Scotland-not theres something wrong with Manchester lol). Also J.R.R Mcloud discovered insulin in 1923-aberdeen medic-woo haha!

From you guys it seems that Aberdeen has a good reputation! Perhaps i didnt give it the chance when i visited. I think the halls put me off most from what I saw, and apparently they dont even have internet(not sure if thats true). Only one thing i can suggest is choose what you want to do, letting other would be foolish as you could regret it for the rest of your life. As for St Andrews having a quieter pace of life, kinda true but not entirely. As the place is pretty small its all crammed in so it doesnt feel as quiet as it could. Nightlife is good if your into your bars more. Theres a bar/club called the Lizard which is small but plays pretty decent music, best in St Andrews. But if you want proper night life you go to Dundee, they organize a bus which is next to nothing. Although night life is a main key for most in choosing a uni (definitely is me) I didnt let this fact change my mind, and Im soo happy for it! But at the end of the day, most people love it wherever they go, I only know of one person ever dropping out of uni, and that was from leeds.
oh come on Lou, aberdeen has the actual zoology department so it will be better for nightlife and your chosen subject!

froddo - forgive me for being stupid but if you live in Hove i fail to see how you know St Andrews in so much detail...
