The Student Room Group

A plea for help!

I am suffering from RLS (Restless Leg Syndrome), a condition which causes my legs to itch and twitch considerably all night long, meaning I can barely sleep sometimes. I have eliminated causes such as medication, alcohol, smoking and a high-caffeine intake, but a lot of the websites I have visited recommend a diet high in iron, magnesium and vitamin E. I know foods like spinach and watercress contain a lot of iron and beans and pulses contain a lot of vitamin E, but does anyone know any simple, easy foods which contain iron/ vitamin E/ magnesium? I am a skint student who can't cook, so I can't really afford expensive foods and I can't whip up many recipes (although any would be appreciated; I'd definitely try them!) but any suggestions would be much appreciated. Please please help, even if you only post the name of one food product that contains one of the minerals/vitamins I need, then that help would be very gratefully received! Thanks for reading!

Not sure of foods, but evening primrose oil contains vitamin E. Taking that will help.

EDIT: And it'll help if you suffer any PMT/PMS
Thanks! And I do get the dreaded PMS so that sounds good!

Eat 2 bananas before going to sleep, they contain potassium. Also take a calcium magnesium zinc supplement e.g

The 250 tab version is on sale until Monday I believe. £6 for 250 tabs.. and you should take at least 2 a day = 125 days worth of non-spasmed legs.

Thank you so much! I've tried eating one banana a day, but not close to bedtime, so I'll try 2 before bed. And cheers for the link, I'll take a look!

no problemo.. you know try Lidl for cheap rocket and spinach. They were so damn cheap it made me happy.. 69p for a box of rocket and 59p for a bag full of spinach. Eat the things raw in a salad, they contain magnesium as do all green leafy vegetables.

Nuts have a lot of magnesium - you can get them fairly cheap in the supermarket, or on a fruit and veg market if you have one near you. Wikipedia suggests cashews and almonds in particular, and it also says that wholemeal bread has twice the magnesium of white bread so that might be something you could change to if you don't eat brown bread already.

Here's the source, scroll down to food sources and there's a bit on it.

Hope that helps!

Or grow your own rocket and spinach in the summer. It's not difficult, and you're more likely to eat it if you grow it yourself! I grow mine in pots on the balcony.

I might try that! Sounds quite fun. And I'll have no excuse not to munch it!
