A Few Questions + Accomodation (Trafalgar, James W or Margaret Rule)?

Poll

Best halls

I'm probably going to choose Portsmouth for 2007 entry for Civil Engineering, and have started looking into it in more detail, and have a few questions.

Firstly, halls. My favourite three are Trafalgar, James Watson and Margaret Rule. What are people's opinions on these? How far (walking) from the Engineering buildings (not too sure of names)?

If anybody has photos of the rooms/en suite, it would be much appreciated.

Do the cupboards in kitchens have locks? What about fridges, and are you allowed to have mini fridges in rooms?

What is the music scene like in Portsmouth? I like heavy metal, are there any good concert venues where bands play?

I'll probably have some more questions later, so thanks in advance for any replies (and rep will be given to useful answers).

James Watson is the closest to Anglesea (Eng building) at less than 5 minutes walk, the other two are no more than a 10 minute walk, if that.

I personally live in James Watson. I like it, although it is expensive for what you get. Expect the cleaners to be Nazis lol. The other two are pretty much the same.

There were some pictures of my room on here before, have a search for them.

The cupboards don't have locks and neither do the fridges. In JW there are two fridges, and one freezer. As far as I'm aware, you're not allowed mini fridges in your room.

Every type of music is catered for in Pompey. Good live venues are the Guildhall and Wedgewood rooms.

I live in James Watson, and i love it. I've been in trafalgar and it's just as nice on the inside, but James watson is a little closer to everything. And as for the music scene, there are definitely good concert venues, the wedgewood rooms is pretty good, though not big AT ALL so i'm not sure i'd expect heavy metal bands there. The guildhall is huge, but i'm not too sure about the kinds of bands that play there, i've been there to see ray lamontagne, an acoustic artist though and it was amazing. BUT, route 66 the club, does an indie night and that's pretty good if you like the music. And no, your not allowed mini fridges but you can have one, no one will know or take it away - you get notified of checks a week in advance and then just put it in your cupboard, no one looks in there - they aren't allowed, and anyway they are pretty cool about posters and the like. BUT, i wouldn't recommend it, purely for the noise lol. My flatmate does civil engineering, and i've never heard him complain. He quite likes it, so i wouldn't worry in terms of the course and such, or location. Hope that's answered some of your questions.

Sorry it's not a very good view, but i haven't taken many really lol i tried!

That's an incredibly tidy room!

Mine's almost the same except I've moved that pedistool thing alongside my desk for even more desk room ( I need it cos I have a lot of stuff that takes up my desk space)

^^i miss those chairs, one of the comfiest i've ever sat on..

Thanks for the replies so far.

So the three halls I mentioned are pretty similar inside then?

My main concern is people stealing food (but I suppose you get that everywhere). I'll probably keep most non-refregiated foods in my room.

The desk looks like a good size, I've got a lot of stuff on mine at home and planning to buy a 23" widescreen display to plug into my laptop!

How well are the rooms soundproofed and are there any noise regulations? I'll be taking my guitar + amp and don't really want to disturb people, but I do occasionally like to put some music on and play along.

It's good that they allow posters (one uni I visited wouldn't allow any).

Any more replies/pics appreciated, especially on Trafalgar or MR.

Surprising quite in james watson. On the uni website you'll find a virtual tour. BTW where in the midlands you from?

The three halls are the same inside pretty much. Only differences are the layouts and the locations.

TBH - I don't think there will be problems with people stealing your food. The beauty of being in a flat is that if someone steals food it will be people in your flat so it's less likely to happen. It all depends on the type of people you live with - I haven't had any problems and there is only a couple of people out of loads that I know have had any problems - but that's been down to the unfortunate fact that they've been with some out of order people. and one girl I know where this happened she was fortunate enough to move to another flat - something which might be a possibility if things become that bad.

I'd be wary putting stuff like that in your room - at first anyways. I'd wait a couple of months and see how your enjoying uni before you start putting things like that in your room but that's just me.

Noise is different in different halls. It also depends on your flat mates. Some people I know have their flat mates come and tell them to turn down their music.

I have decks so I suppose you could say I'm pretty noisy. But my flat mates don't mind. I try and play them when I know that the flat is mostly empty or not really late at night/ when I think people will be doing work. Do it like that and you will probably not annoy that many people. If you have loud music on all hours and into the night then you will invite a few complaints.

Soundproofing? Well the walls are paper thin, you'll hear anything but you get used to it. At least in JW anyways. All I know is people I'm mates with that live in those other two halls have had noise complaints etc filled against them, but that could be made into a number of factors - perhaps I've just been fortunate.

Poster's are really only allowed on the notice board they give you. Some people choose to put them up on the walls but that's your problem. If you have stains on the walls or anything caused by posters you get charged - and judging by what I was told by other students when I moved in they said that the uni will charge you pretty heavily and be picky about anything. I haven't bothered - but that's only just because I don't want to pay the uni more money. I just have alll my posters on my noticeboard.

Let me tell you, it was taken a LONG time ago! lol My room is now a small pit. And i've moved the draws down to the bottom of my bed so i can have more desk space, woo! I might try and show you my pit later if i can be bothered....i'd erm, show you the legendary kitchen of mess that keeps getting warnings and the such from cleaners almost every week, but you might cry at the sight....i know i do.

You'd be very unlucky to get food stolen (apart from my milk which goes missing all too often...:frown: ) but when ppl move in they find an empty cupboard n stick ot it. maybe stick a photo or something on the door to say who's it is.

It varies from hall to hall. Traf has paper-thin walls - heard my flatmate doing things i really didnt want to hear late at night!!! - But Jimmy W and Maggie Rule are fine, as are Harry n Bateson. Like the man said, dont play ya guitar late at night, or when ppl are working n you'll be fine. Chances are that they'll ask you to turn it down if you do disturb them - or take the easy way out n simply send you an msn message from the room nxt door!.

I'd sort of agree. It's stupid about the whole paint being the most fragile thing ever used. But apparently its not as bad as it used to be re: charging for damage. Alot of ppl i know have had posters/decorations on their wall and the staff dont really care. they realise you gotta personalise your room. Plus the halls get painted every 2 or 3 years.

It's still not a chance that I'm prepared to take. Says in your contract that you're liable so no one can really complain if they choose to be arsey about it.

My old maggie rule room..

was a good laugh.... dont worry about the walls... we touched up the spots with paint at the end of the year...

maggie rules got the best location cos its close to the bars (like the rest)
but its also closest to the high street for shopping.

Hey sorry to hijack your thread but i just have a few questions

I really like the look of James W. The kitchens are all shared so does that mean you dont have a kitchen in your falt? Also how many people usually share the shared kitchens?

How many people also share a flat? I know it varies but any ruff ideas?

Thanks for your help

Every other wall in JW is paper thin, I can hear my flatmate next door banging her boyfriend now and then.

You have a kitchen per flat, so usually 6 people sharing. Although occasionally 4.

Everyone has their own room.

Everyone has their own room.

It's also a single room!

LOL - Twisty - JA told me that he had 2 beds in his room and I thought he meant he had a double room so in the "other comments/ requests" box on the halls form I made a request for a room "big enough for a double bed"

Probs isn't that funny - but I laughed when I relealised because the guys down the offices must have had a right laugh at me sounding like a pr*ck!

Yeah thanks, I've had a look at the virtual tours. Noticed that the showers don't have a curtain/screen!

I'm from Solihull in the West Midlands (currently at Solihill 6th Form College).

What sort of date do 1st years go to Portsmouth then? I'm planning to work over summer and will need to give dates of availability. Would they call me into the uni for anything over the summer?

I've been reading a few threads and discussions about problems in James Watson about no hot water etc, is this a recurring problem or just initial issues?
