# P1 help needed - differentiation!!! watch

Announcements
1. hi, I have p1 edexcel tomorrow and I would really appreciate some help with this question. it's the november 2002 paper,3i) if anyone has it.

differentiate with respect to x:

2x^3 + x^0.5 + ((x^2 + 2x)/x^2)

I understand how to differentiate it, but I don't understand how I can make the fraction into a form that I can differentiate. the mark scheme says divide: 1 + 2x^-1

I don't understand.. could anyone help?

well

(x^2 + 2x) / x^2

is the same as

(x^2 / x^2) + (2x / x^2)

which equals

1 + 2x^-1
3. well the answer to the fractioned bit is

-2x^-2

and thats what i got before i differentiated?!?

well

(x^2 + 2x) / x^2

is the same as

(x^2 / x^2) + (2x / x^2)

which equals

1 + x^-1
thank you SO much!!! it all makes so much sense..
