Aberdare Hall!!!

I cant find anything on Aberdare Hall apart from the cradiff website:frown: which is frustrating since i haven't had a chance to visit, so can someone please share their views (if possible any pics would be amazing too!!).

What are the rooms like?
How many people do you have to share a bathroom with?
How big are the bathrooms?
Is it all just international students?
Is it really strict?
How hard is it to make friends or socialize?

I'm also in aberdarehouse... Hard to find further information about this accomdation..

It is my 8th choicr and I'm quite sick of being allocated in a shared bathroom, partcareted room without any guys...Social circle would be so limited and sometimes the situation could be complicated if all my roomates are girls.

🙉🙉Really want to swap to another dom..At least ensuite!!!

hey!
I just wanted to ask if the rooms in old hall look very old (furniture, construction problems etc) and with 17 people sharing only 4 baths isn't that a bit messy and gross? :frown:
Does anyone have any pictures of how the rooms look besides the ones in the cardiff site? ( btw the pictures in cardiff site are from which section, Old Hall, Library Wing and Garden Wing? because the room looks pretty new, or is the pic misleading? )
Is it better in Library wing or in Garden Wing , since there are less people to share a bathroom and are newer sections (i think)?
Also where do the majority of the students who pick self-catered options get to go? ( i hope not old hall :s-smilie: )
ooh and since in every flat there are a lot of people who share bathrooms ,are they at least cleaned regularly??

Thank you

ohhh and have any rooms been refurbished recently ( at least Old Hall which probably is pretty old) ?
And are there strict rules around there? (i heard that being back in 11 pm is just a rumor- or at least i hope :s-smilie: )

Is it weird sharing bathrooms with so many girls and do you have to wait to actually get in a shower or toilet??
(I certainly hope not and if so that is rediculous!! :frown: )
Any bad experiences or tips?
Is it worth it because its super close and cheap or is it better to pay a little more and get smt with better features?
Please be honest
Thank you!

Hey I noticed no one had replied to you, I'm a first year in Aberdare Hall  It was definitely not my first choice because I was clearing but it's actually a nice place to live once you get used to it. I'm in the Garden Wing by the way haha! To answer your questions:

I don't know much about Old hall, the rooms are apparently gorgeous and are kind of pentagon shaped? Not your usual rectangle student room. The people I know in Old Hall don't seem to have any issues with the bathrooms, and each bathroom has multiple showers and toilets. What I will say about Old Hall is that since the flats are so large it's not as easy to socialise, however I have met plenty of girls who love it there. I don't have pictures but my room in Garden Wing is great, I mean it's a typical student room so nothing fancy but the rooms in Aberdare Hall are WAY bigger than the rooms in other residences such as Talybont. There's a giant desk and loads of storage space, it's a really nice room.

I don't know much about library wing either I'm afraid, however I am very happy that I'm in garden wing instead of the other buildings. Having a smaller flat is really good and also I prefer being self-catered. Since Garden Wing is separated from the main building, I think that it's a bit more independent than the other sections which I like. Self-catered students are in the Garden Wing  The flats are cleaned every weekday morning, trust my flat is wayyy cleaner than other residences haha! To be honest I was really worried about the shared bathroom before I came here but once you adapt and get a routine it's really ok, and the showers are huge

As far as I know no rooms have been refurbished lately, but they're all decent to be honest. Erm some people think that in the old hall and library wing its a bit stricter but in garden wing there are no rules, I hardly ever see staff it's very relaxed and I've come back at 3am pretty often aha! It's fine sharing the bathroom, it's a bit busy at like 7am/8am but I've never had to wait for the shower or toilet. It can just get a busy around the mirror.

My only bad experience is with the residences team, they're reluctant to fix issues in the kitchen (our hob needed to be replaced), but I think that's an issue in all of the residences.

I like Aberdare Hall a lot more than I thought I would, it's quiet so if you want to party all the time Talybont's probably better but you can get sleep here and the rooms are a lot bigger, and it's awesome being so close to everything.

Hope this helped

hey !
you are so lucky, garden wind is the nicest of all !
I'm applying for 2016 and i hope i get there too! Aberdare looks good to me (thanks for the description btw it really helped  ) Besides I'm not really a party animal so I prefer somewhere quieter. And thank god the rooms are bigger because in taly they sure do look like holes ( and not often cleaned) !!!!
ohh and i just wanted to ask, about how many girls are there in each section

thanks a lot

Sorry for replying late.
I've moved out from the old hall now coz personally I can't endure the shared bathroom anymore.

It's actually exaggerated for 17 stduents sharing 4 bathroom. In my flat, it's about 13 students sharing 5 bathrooms. But some of the facilities sometimes do not work well such as the toilets can't flush or no hot water in the midnight.

And yes, the cleaner helps to clean the kitchen and bathroom everyday so at least it's clean and not disgusting.

It's also a little bit tricky about the gate. There is a main gate and through the gate you can walk up to your room in 2 mins. However, the door behind the main gate is always locked! So you have to walk through the backyards, open nearly 6-7 doors to get to your room. It's a long and dark walk, also scary in the midnight.

The facilities are not that old...They've refurbished it several times. Well, the window are not in order to keep its 'vintage style'//

But as I said, since it is an 'old hall', it is scary at midnight.

The only advantage, which I think is... The room is big. Nearly 2 or 3 times bigger than the room in Taly North.

Personlly, I think the old hall is the oldest and the poorest of the Aberdare Hall/

I've got loads of pictures of the old hall, if you wants to see it, just PM me.

hey!
this is kinda random but are all bills (electricity, water) included in the price in Aberdare or did you have to pay extra money for that?
thanks

Hey! I've got an offer for 2016 and was considering Aberdare since I'm really not a party goer haha. What are the shared bathrooms like? I've stayed in halls in London before just for a weekend and the showers were in cubicles and you could see shadows behind them!! Has anyone got any pictures? Thanks in advance

I've got an offer too for 2016 !
well, all i know is that its not a 'wet type' shower like in other halls , so its much better! i'm not sure but i think most shower rooms have a very blury glass
(yes, it might seem a little bit creepy since you can see the persons shadow :s-smilie:)
but i guess it wont be that bad , since the glass will be too blury maybe.

Congrats! Is Cardiff your first choice? Also what's the wet type? haha. I'd prefer to have an ensuite but they're expensive and I quite like the sound of Aberdare Hall tbh

hi!
congrats to you too!
Its not my first choice but i'm really considering firming my offer.
Referring to ensuite bathrooms, you will need to learn to share a bathroom with other people next year so you will probably get used to it. And since they are cleaned frequently , it will be just fine!
However, if you want something like an ensuite ,i would suggest aberconway hall and cartwright court since you only share a bathroom with one other person only and its relatively cheap! (although they are further away from main building)
PS: what are you going to study?

'wet type' bathrooms dont have a built-in, enclosed shower cubicle,
which means that you pretty much get everything wet in there when taking a shower ,and its not that bad but it kinda bothers me spreading soap and water everywhere if you're not careful.
( if you like to sing and just fool around with soap , dont go for it cause you will make a mess! )

Ah thanks  I'm the same, depending on whether I get my first choice I think Cardiff will defiantly be either my firm or first choice. Yeah, I think I'll just have to get used to it haha
I'll look into those, thanks! I'm doing Biomedical Science with a foundation year since I didn't do A Levels  You?

oh thats very interesting! (and quite difficult discipline i would say)
I applied for chemistry with a preliminary year ,but they offered me the opportunity to go straight to the first year!
and thank god because i think its pretty difficult , since the foundation year in science contains a lot of core disciplines like physics and maths in more depth and it would be quite harsh for me :s-smilie:.

Ah, that's great that you don't have to do the extra year! I'd love to go straight into it but I probably wouldn't understand half of it haha
See I really like the sciences so I'm quite glad that I get to do a bit of them. I do believe that most of those topics are optional though (don't quote me on that). Defiantly better for you though, and it's certainly cheaper to knock the extra year off
