No it's not that bad. The city centre is best avoided on Saturday nights when the population of the Valleys descend on Cardiff, bringing with them their uncivilised ways, and also during football matches (when most pubs are awash with fans before and after the game and closed during it).

However, there are loads of pubs in Cathays, where most of the students are and the football fans aren't, and the rest of the time the city centre is quite safe, it is exceptionally policed in the evenings. Aside from burglary (prevalent in all urban student areas, not just Cardiff), Cardiff is a very safe city.

Great, thank you. Is Seng Hall/Court close to these "best avoided areas"?

Senghenydd is closest to the city centre, but it's still in the heart of the student area. None of the residences are in the city centre proper, so don't worry. The area best avoided is St Marys St and the surrounding no-car matchday zone (which is parallel to the Millennium Stadium). You'll soon learn where that is when you come to Cardiff.

Only been here since September, but i'm regularly out city centre on saturday nights and match days an i've not once seen any trouble.

I think generally the crowd in the city centre is rougher over the weekend, and on matchdays the door security isn't worth bothering with. It doesn't bother me because I think the best club nights are during the week, and at the weekend there is loads to do in Cathays anyway.

...especially if Wolves are in Cardiff playing football, avoid at all costs! And I'm not even there yet =P

haha. hmm im from cardiff, if anyone has a bad impression of cardiff its really nowhere near as bad as some make out. It's a lively city with a mixture of different people. The weekends are very busy in town, all the locals and the valleys hit the town  Theres hardly any trouble and if there is the police soon sort it out  Cardiff has a main street packed full of clubs/bars and pubs. Cardiff is renowned as a good night out and the fact that theres a high concentration of bars/clubs/pubs is a big reason lol.
The only areas best avoided are far in the eastern and western suburbs, for example Ely, Caerau, Llanrumney, Tremorfa. The city centre and surrounding districts, ie. Cathays, Canton, Pontcanna, Roath etc...you've got nothing to worry about at all. The centre is well policed on friday, saturday and match days. There's obviously the odd little rumble here and there but no proper riots or anything and the nightlife is fantastic. Party capital as well as welsh capital!
