Town Hall and Symphony Hall occasionally have some good classical concerts, if that's your bag.

And there's a big yellow vintage clothing shop in Digbeth, if you're interested.

Also go see the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery (they have a fab tea room), but be aware that exposure to excessive Pre-Raphaelitism can cause nausea and irritation :p:

Yeah already seen a Messiaen recital I want to go to at the Symphony Hall in December.
Clothes shop goes on the list , and i've already been to the gallery cafe, but not the gallery :p:. I'll get my anti-burne-jones specs out then

Nineteenth century

Every gallery that isn't in London seems to be packed with pre-raphelite stuff. Tully House Gallery in Carlisle is the same. In Italy every local gallery has its own amazing works from the 15th century and stuff.

I need to learn more about art

I'm really bored and I've run out of hobgoblin :frown:

I am so sorry. I love Wychwood. Got me a case under the stairs for when times get hard.http://www.wychwood.co.uk/new_images/art_lagerboy_whatsthematter_800x.jpg

Hey GOGs... looks like I might be a UCL GOG next autumn... my supervisor has promised introductions and recommendations if I want them

I'm glad things are looking up for you. I'll keep my fingers crossed. Thanks for that list of funding places, although alas, I am apparently far too middle class to qualify for anything.

Yeah, it was already my emergency stash so now I have empty supplies. The only thing I have left is bloody white lightning but I can't consider it until there is no liquid left in the world, and that includes my own piss. And my Dad would kill me if I broke into his speckled hen supplies. But, desperate times...

We always say that my twin brother looks like the hobgoblin, and in fact whenever we go into pubs that serve it he asks for a free point on the basis that he's advertising it, but he's yet to get one. This is normally followed by one of us saying "A frightful hobgoblin stalks through Europe. This is the hobgoblin of Reuben."

What about the Baltic, the Biscuit Factory or the Laing in Newcastle?

Every gallery I've been to :ninja:

 My brother has applied for a "hardship grant" from Sheffield. This has pissed me off because those grants are supposed to be for people who need the money, not who spend everything they have on booze, clothes and DVDs and then lie on the form. He has compounded my anger by wearing a sleeveless t-shirt in seriousness. How am I related to this person? I wish he's **** off back to Sheffield and stay there. He treats home like a hotel.

Tch, you are a bad arty type Becca. The Baltic is especially pimp.

Coming from the land of the bumbly boo pretty much guarantees coolness.

Where's Ilex? :frown:

Oh, do you know the city well? I'm going to be living in Hockley/Jewellery Quarter, know anything good to do there?

The Jewellery Quarter is gorgeous, seriously. St Paul's Square is one of my favourite bits of Birmingham.

What, you're condemning my new city to your brother? That's not very nice.

On the subject of Brothers, your bro has a bit of a Ross Noble vibe going on, Jacob.

It's my father's 50th birthday today and hence he forgot to give me any work to do in the office today, so I'm essentially being paid to sit here in case the phone rings and translate Anglo-Saxon metrical charms. If only real life were like this

what the hell is an anglo-saxon metrical charm?

Yeah I've walked through St Paul's square. It's lovely  I've spied a few restaurants in the area that I'm hoping to frequent

Haha you might meet my brother Ilex, if he's allowed to stay in Sheffield :p:

They're weird Old English spells for things like making your crops grow or finding your lost cattle. Quite good fun

Commuting from Sheffield to Brum?
Inter-City tastic! How long will that take?

If you want restaurant recommendations, I'm your girl - I eat like a horse.

TBH I probably won't come across any Sheffielders unless they're in my department or a postgrad (since I'm commuting in from Brum), so hopefully I'll be spared the sleeveless wonder

Sleeveless wonder

Commuting from Brum, that's dedication! Whereabouts in Brum do you live? Obviously not specifically, but which area? (I'm going to stalk you :ninja: :p: )

Reply 9939

Ick - Commuting - that's why I didn't take up a studentship in Bournemouth - 3 hours each way!!!! 6 hours when I could be (playing with the kids) doing something more interesting

Can't find the strikethrough icon????
