Talented third years count just as well! I'm envious of your early morning work ethic. I'm such an Oblomov (sluggard).

I've read Goncharov, actually.
No need to be envious, though; I only get up that early when there's an emergency. For some reason it works better for me than real all-nighters.

Here's a question. Those of you with articles / essays / theses to write, do any of you actually manage to write anything decent before at least 8pm? Are night-owl tendencies general among postgrads? Or is it just me?

I wrote both my undergrad dissertations through the night hours. As for the PhD thesis it will have to be evening/night time as I'll be doing it round a full time job!

I use it in real life when undergrads get under my feet. I'm doing a PostGradDip in Legal Practice (needed to qualify as a Solicitor) just now and we have 3 hour intensive workshops. Halfway through we get a 15 min break to go get ourselves a drink and if you get behind undergrads in the corridor it's touch n go if you make it. Slow gits!!

I'm the opposite, actually. Anything I write after 8pm is usually pretty rubbish, so if I absolutely have to finish an essay, I prefer getting up early (between 3 and 4 am) to staying up late.

I'm similar, in that after 8pm by brain puts its slippers on and settles down for the evening. I don't ever get up any earlier than 7am or work past 9pm, no matter how much work I have on.

I think moaning about the slow undergrads was fairly

Undergraduates generally clog up corridors and slow things down, that is the nature of things. Some of them also seem to think they have a divine right to speak to you when it is convenient for them, and not for you.

Reply 171

On behalf of all undergraduates ever, I hereby offer this apology. We're sorry :frown:

Gonna be a grad, yeeeeeh

Reply 172

We were all there once. Let's just put it behind us and move on.

Reply 173

I'm sure I didn't walk slowly and clog up corridors. I was normally in a rush to get out :p:

I'm feeling depressed because some idiot advertising-wannabe negged me for comments I made on the Oxford forum about undergrads going to work in meaningless big money corporate jobs because all they care about is earning potential. It has made me grumpier than ever. Why did I get involved?

Neg reps have such bad consequences for my mood for the rest of the day, which is so stupid! Am feeling at my most  for weeks.

Ne'er mind, I'm over it now. Where has everyone gone? You're not all working, are you?!?!?!

It's funny that. I just read in a Cam alumni magazine about some girl who spent a year after Cambridge in Investment Banking and thought just that!!!

I helped out at an open event for potential firsts years last week. Their happiness and optimisn is sickening! Can't they see... can't they see? Cynicism and coffee are their future.

One of the oferees asked what the worst thing was about University. I shot her in the face.

So, gun-toting postgrads, then? :p:

Just finished the last essay for the MSt before the dissertation. I had to finish a bibliographical essay on Beckett on Wednesday night, which weighed in at around 6000 words. I just managed (Friday night) to finish the second one on Joyce and Mangan, weighing in at a whopping (and word-limit violating) 7300 words.

I am knackered. Thoroughly. Knackered. 13000 words in a very short space of time. The dissertation is only 10000 and I have the whole of next term to write it - should be a doddle!

Phew. Knackered. Jaysus. And this is my 250th post. Let the good times roll. I'm going to bed.
