Could you have an allergy to something ? allergy symptoms can be similar to cold symptoms.

I usually get a cough before a cold develops. :confused:

Anyway, ;doctor;

If your cough/cold persists for more than 3-4 weeks it may be worth seeing a doctor, particularly if you're prone to such illnesses. It could be all sorts of things triggering it - it's not something that anyone can really diagnose over the Internet.

The obvious things you can do to help (nb: I'm not suggesting any of these are quick fixes!) are: stop smoking (if you do), eat more healthily, exercise more, etc.

Ok some things my college nurse told me to do to get rid of my cough...

Sleep either with a couple of fat books under the legs of your bed to raise it, or have two or more pillows. This raises your head, so any phlem or anything goes down your throat rather than onto the back of it to irritate it.
If it's a dry cough, sit in a steamy bathroom for 5 or 10 minutes, put wet towels on a warm/hot radiator, bowls of hot water around the room, or if you have a facial steamer use that (so annoyed, I have one at home, but obviously didn't bring it to uni!). Apparently if you leave the kettle lid open that stops it clicking off when it's boiled so you can fill the room with steam- just don't get burnt!
Melting Vicks Vapo Rub in hot water, getting a little Sudafed vaporiser or something similar from Boots, it makes the air all menthol-y and helps clear your nose.
If you go outside, put a scarf over your mouth and nose so you're not breathing in cold air, because this will irritate your throat.

Though...if you rattle when you breathe and your chest hurts go to the doctor- it may be a bacterial chest infection that can be cleared up with antibiotics. I'd probably go anyway since you've been ill for so long.

see a doctor

in the mean time

hot lemsip lemon, dont care if it tastes like hell get it down your throat
1 and i stress the ONE part as any more than that and your pretty much gonna resemble a zombie for a day ibuprofen 400mg

climb into bed and sleep for a minimum of 8 hours, make sure that your still dressed with possibly a jumper on and sweat it out

for the cough i'd go with warm lemon OR warm milk to sooth it

have fun

It's not that long. Bear in mind that it could quite easily be two minor illnesses back to back or something. There's not an awful lot doctors can do about coughs and colds.

Unless it's really bad and affecting the day to day things in your life, it's very rarely worth going to a doctor in the first four weeks of a cough/cold.
